  • Shaded pitches amid Rhône Valley vineyards just outside Violès
  • Town of Orange 15 minutes’ drive; Mont Ventoux activities 50 minutes
  • Outdoor pool and play area; barbecue, restaurant and vineyard visits
Fresh breakfast pastries to be savoured on a covered terrace, a court for playing pétanques and vineyards all around: that’s surely quite a few boxes ticked for anyone who’s after a traditional French holiday. And it’s all here at Camping des Favards, a family-friendly site on the outskirts of the village of Violès, in the Rhône Valley. While you set up on the tree-shaded pitches, take a moment to look around at the splendid landscape: beyond the site-owned vineyards (which can be toured, as can the winery) are forested slopes and rocky mountains that are waiting to be hiked, climbed and summited. They include the ragged Dentelles de Montmirail massif (20 minutes’ drive), with multiple routes to the top, and Mont Ventoux (50 minutes), a well-known area for walking and cycling trails. But maybe your holiday is all about taking it easy, in which case the site has got you covered too, with an outdoor pool, a play area and a restaurant where you can sample local specialities paired with the site’s own wines. If you’d rather do your own cooking, there are several barbecue stations, and free wood is supplied. For provisions, you can head into Violès or explore any of the farmers’ markets that take place in the surrounding villages. When it comes to everyday practicalities, Camping des Favards also delivers, with a toilet block and showers (including disabled facilities), a washing-up area, a launderette and drying room, and charging points for electric cars.

Electric grass and earth pitch (XL)

Liked: Lovely friendly welcome. Good English spoken. Peaceful countryside location on a vineyard just a few miles from historical Orange. Not far off the motorway. We used the site for one night as a stop off further south but could easily have stayed and explored the area for a few more days. Swimming pool and nice bar and restaurant onsite.

Disliked: Watch the Trees. Couldn’t swing the caravan round at top of site so had to unhitch and it must have been the longest distance I have used the mover. Initially I was given a pitch near reception but couldn’t get the caravan on it although it was enormous. It was just the hazard of the trees.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Clean toilet block

Disliked: All the soap, anti bacterial and toilet dispensers empty. So nothing to wash your hands with once you have used the toilet 🤢 Very dusty campsite .

Electric grass and earth pitch

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: The great feel to the place. Lovely pool & lounge/bar area, giving a great holiday atmosphere. We had a touring caravan pitch in the new area & had 16amp to use our air con unit. Staff are fantastic & a credit to the site/business. Loads of places to visit like Orange - A must to visit if you can 😄

Disliked: There wasn’t any.

Electric grass and earth pitch (XL)

Liked: Choice of pitches Staff very friendly and helpful Facilities very clean Ability to share a large pitch with my brother and sister in law, made it slightly cheaper Pool very clean and not too crowded, although possibly it will be busier now it’s school holidays Food good, variety of food sellers coming onto site some nights although they didn’t always have enough ( burger van couldn’t take our order at 7-30 as they had sold out) we were not advised to order early and collect at a prearranged time.

Local attractions

The remarkably well-preserved Roman theatre in Orange (15 minutes’ drive) has earned it the title of UNESCO World Heritage site. It sits at the bottom of a tree-covered hill and is still an atmospheric stage for plays and concerts. The town also has a Roman triumphal arch and – fast-forward to modern times – an aerospace museum displaying a range of military aircraft. Parc Spirou Provence (25 minutes) ought to keep your kids happy and entertained, with rollercoasters, drop towers and other thrill rides, plus gentler attractions for younger guests. There are also balloon artists and assorted characters from famous comics to meet. On hot days, you might prefer to hit a waterpark – how convenient, then, that Wave Island is just across the main road from Parc Spirou. Sitting on the banks of the Rhône, Avignon (40 minutes) is an elegant city with a medieval centre spreading out from the imposing Palais des Papes, built in the 14th century during a turbulent period in papal history. Check out the remains of the Pont d’Avignon, stretching only halfway across the river, then stop for a drink on the leafy Place de l’Horloge.
