  • Dog-friendly site under two kilometres from Orange’s Roman attractions
  • A few hundred metres from the ViaRhôna and Via Venaissia cycle routes
  • Rural grass pitches with tables, chairs and a hammock; shops nearby
Rural lands just outside of the Roman city of Orange beckon… and Aire de Frais Puits, a dog-friendly site with flat and spacious grass pitches, is an especially juicy pick. Each 200-square-metre pitch is peppered with shade, plus tables, chairs and a hammock for outdoor meals and chillout time. The site is family-friendly, but children under the age of one year are not accepted. A good collection of facilities are on hand, including electricity, bins and wifi, with a fresh water supply available from the on-site well. The site also provides up to two bags of ice cubes per day for each pitch. In terms of travel, just a few hundred metres away, there's a bus stop with a 30-minute direct line to the centre of Orange and its Roman theatre. The site is at the crossroads for the A7 and A9 motorways, as well as being near Route Nationale 7. Two wheels rather than four? It’s also just a few hundred metres from here to the ViaRhôna cycling trail (from Geneva to the Med, past vineyards and along the Rhône River) and the Via Venaissia cycling route (four kilometres of cycling along an abandoned railway line with views of vineyards). Other attractions for keen sightseers are the Roman monuments in Orange. It’s a 25-minute walk to the Théâtre antique d'Orange, built in the 1st century AD, which hosts a range of performances like operas and festivals (including Les Chorégies d'Orange, the oldest musical festival in France, held once per year). Despite being just a kilometre and a half from the city centre, Aire de Frais Puits is very much about the Vaucluse countryside rather than the city – a handy spot indeed for mixing up urban convenience with peaceful rural vibes.

Electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Simple, clean and cosy campground. Very friendly and caring owner! Excellent wine and beer offers. Very calm and perfectly connected by bus in order to get to City Center. Little playground for kids, sheep on the fields next to the camp. Kids loved it!

Disliked: Unfortunately no possibility to empty chem WC or dump used water. It was announced in description so we knew in advance about it. With such possibility the campground would be a 5/5!

Local attractions

Since the city of Orange is so handily within walking distance, start out by checking out one of its biggest monuments. The Triumphal arch (25 minutes’ walk) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest and oldest Roman triumphal arches in France. Orange has a long list of historic buildings, including the Palace of the Prince (25 minutes) and Temple protestant de l'Eglise Unie (half an hour), all built in different times and under different rulers. Where could be better to get your oranges, honey, wines and other artisanal creations than the Orange market? It’s held on Thursday mornings and has over 300 traders from the region. You might source a few snacks for your future explorations, which could include the lovely Parc de la Colline Saint-Eutrope (35 minutes) walk, accessible from stairs near the theatre. The park has stunning views of Mont Ventoux and the city.
