After unusual accommodation in a peaceful countryside setting? You’ll get exactly that at Nuit Étoilée, a back-to-nature site tucked under trees and 15 minutes’ drive from the medieval village of Mondragon in the Vaucluse. Surrounded by greenery and vineyards, the bijou units are equipped with pillows, sheets, duvets, and blankets. Each has its own private garden area – handy for star-spotting on clear nights – with picnic tables, seating and a composting loo. A shared chalet is available on site for guest use; it’s equipped with showers – you can borrow hair dryers, towels and shower gel – and washing-up sinks. There’s also a simple kitchen corner with a coffee machine, refrigerator and microwave. If you don’t fancy cooking for yourselves, breakfast and supper are both available from the owners, but you’ll need to book ahead – and there’s a supplement too. You also have the option of a private hot tub experience; reservations are required the day before and again there is an extra charge. The owners live on site, so are there 24/7 to help you in any way; they also know the region inside out and are happy to provide you with sightseeing inspiration.

Local attractions

Those of you keen to get exploring on foot or under pedal power can discover the protected Massif d’Uchaux straight from the pitches; this region of oak and pine forest is laced with trails for all levels of ability. To combine local heritage with your stroll, hike up to the ruins of Château du Castellas (about an hour’s walk), from where you’ll have views over to Mount Ventoux; cyclists can attempt the challenging switchback route to its summit (three hours by bike). There’s more Vaucluse history evident at the Village Troglodytique de Barry (half an hour’s drive), a former subterranean village dug deep into underground tunnels. Inhabited since Neolithic times, it was only abandoned in the late 20th century and you can still see the remains of medieval Château de Chabrières and a few farming cottages. Wine-lovers can head for Provençal vineyards like the local biodynamic Domaine La Guicharde (five minutes’ walk) and organic Domaine La Romance (half an hour’s drive) to sample their rich red wines, and perhaps take a couple of bottles home as souvenirs of your stay in the Vaucluse.
