Bringing a touch of the Wild West to Provence, Ranch du Puits de Riquier is a remote site surrounded by untamed Var countryside. With a multitude of horses grazing in the neighbouring fields, this quiet spot is five minutes’ drive from the sleepy hilltop village of Moissac-Bellevue, and 10 minutes from spectacular Lac de Sainte-Croix.
The ranch is run on sustainable lines by owner Laure; it’s powered by solar energy and accommodation is in ensuite wooden cabins sleeping up to four in a mix of double and bunk beds (linens are provided). Each one has its own private decking with comfy seats, and there’s a covered dining area, communal firepit and picnic tables in the leafy grounds.
Order the generous breakfast of fresh pastries and homemade jams to kickstart your day, and if you’d like to sample regional dishes, a table d’hôte menu using fresh local ingredients is available upon request in the evening (dietary needs can be catered for).
Laure is a Var native who knows the region inside out; she’s happy to provide sightseeing inspiration and help you book activities like horse riding (from the site) or kayaking on the lake.

Local attractions
If you’re keen to try out some watersports, head straight for Lac de Sainte-Croix (10 minutes’ drive), where you can hire all the gear needed for paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking and dinghy sailing on the turquoise waters. If you want to explore a little further, rent an electric boat and power yourself across the lake to the spectacular Gorges du Verdon; you can also see the canyon from above by paragliding from Roc N Vol (half an hour).
Hikers and cyclists can circumnavigate the lake on gentle tracks, or branch off into the Provençal landscapes of pine forest and lavender fields. If you’re content to kickback in the sun, get together a picnic and head to the pebble beach at Plage de Chabassole (half an hour).
Active family days out can include time spent on the treetop rope courses at Accro Verdon (15 minutes) – and when you’re keen to sneak something unusual onto your holiday itinerary, follow the enchanting open-air sculpture trail at the Musée à Ciel Ouvert de Maria de Faykod (20 minutes).
