Dive into this fab site in the Var for fine times on, beside and under the water. If you’ve ever longed to explore the bottom of the sea but been too nervous to try, Camping Lou Pantaï has the perfect solution. Stay on this small eco-friendly and flower-filled site in the summer months and the local diving school will give you lessons in the heated swimming pool. Once you’ve earned your sub-aqua spurs, the whole nature-filled Côte d’Azur is your oyster. Alternatively, you can borrow flippers, masks and snorkels from the friendly folks at Camping Lou Pantaï, and hire bikes to get down to the beach; pedal-powered it’s a 10 minute-trip to the sands, the sea and the shops and bars and eateries of Le Pradet. Close to the sea, with the hills behind, this is a grand part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, bristling with stuff to see and do (and eat). They pair that with a laidback atmosphere on the site: facilities are simple and clean, with hot showers and disabled access in the washrooms and a laundry to keep you looking your best. Alongside the heated outdoor pool for swimming and splashing, there’s a playground for the kids, and table tennis for those with a competitive streak. For those with a more bon vivant approach, there’s a welcoming bar serving snacks; like many of the buildings on the site, it's elegantly made from recycled materials.

Local attractions

For beach days and active stuff on the waves, Le Pradet is an easy option, with golden sands, safe swimming and plenty of watersports outlets. For something quieter and wilder, head half an hour to the Plage des Salins, with views out to the Hyères islands and a flamingo-filled salt marsh behind. The islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros are a must-do, easily reached by ferry from Toulon (20 minutes’ drive): both quiet and wild with almost Caribbean-looking bays and winding paths all over. For more wilderness exploring, it’s 50 minutes to Cassis at the edge of the Calanques National Park. You can hire electric boosted mountain bikes to explore the steeper bits or boats to navigate the marine sections of this fab area, where rocky uplands plunge down to deserted coves and eagles circle overhead. Magic World at Hyères (15 minutes) delights visitors of all ages with rollercoasters, fairground rides, amusements and spectaculars and the slides and chutes, flumes and pools of Aqualand Saint-Cyr make a good spot for cooling off, half an hour away. Another good option on hot days is the mining museum at Cap Garonne (10 minutes): top off subterranean strolls with clifftop walks round the cape, finishing on the beach at Bau Rouge.
