- Shaded dog-friendly site 15 minutes’ walk from Le Lavandou beach
- A 25-minute drive from Hyères; 20 minutes’ walk to the port
- Boules, kids’ play area and ping pong on site; cafés and shops nearby
Hello, the blue Mediterranean and Var’s fine-sand beaches, wild forest and the Golden Isles. That’ll soon be your introduction to Var when you arrive at Camping Saint Pons, a shaded dog-friendly site in Le Lavandou. Within 15 minutes’ walk of the town’s boulevard and sand strip, this park has plenty of shade from 100-year-old trees and a friendly vibe.
‘Forget’ your vehicle if you’d like, because Camping Saint Pons is a short walk from the coastal path (an invitation to swim or contemplate the splendid landscapes). Naturally, the authentic fishing town runs activities like sailing, diving, climbing, water skiing, parasailing and boat rental, as well as a sailing school.
Set sail for the Golden Isles (Port-Cros, Ile du Levant and Porquerolles) from the port, 20 minutes’ walk away. Saint-Tropez is an hour’s drive away too, but closer by are sports facilities, miniature golf, a cycling path onto other splendid beaches or Toulon and a rambling path. That’s on top of the town’s shops, cafés and restaurants, of course.
Le Lavandou is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region to the south of the Varoise. It’s known as ‘the city of dolphins’, as pods are often spotted from its 12 beaches (which each have differently-sized and differently-coloured sand grains).
Away from the Med, the town is also at the foot of the Massif des Maures, where there’s Mediterranean vegetation and protected environments. Le Lavandou has a market, shops, cafés and restaurants, and Bormes-les-Mimosas (five minutes’ drive) has another market.
First, you’ll have to tear yourself away from the facilities around the wooded and flowery site. Over the two hectares, there’s a boulodrome (for boules), a kids’ play area, ping pong tables, washing machines and dryers.

Local attractions
Cycles, please? Set out over the Chem. du Train des Pignes (25 minutes’ walk), which follows an old railway line along the coast. Bormes-les-Mimosas (half an hour walk) is a flowery, medieval village with a very peaceful setting indeed.
Perhaps you’d like to acquaint yourself with Hyères (25 minutes’ drive) and its 11th-century fortress and early modernist house Villa Noailles (half an hour). Toulon (40 minutes) has one of the largest harbours in Europe, and Collobrières’ (40 minutes) claim to fame is its candied chestnuts.
Views too, please? Calanque de Port-Miou (an hour and 20 minutes) is a scenic hiking path, and alternative journeys are the local wine route.
