  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven on the river Argens near Fréjus
  • A 10-minute drive from the beach; 45 minutes to St Tropez and Cannes
  • Restaurant, entertainment, bike hire, kids’ club and swimming pools
Keen for a comfortable outdoor stay on the Côte d'Azur? Somewhere with lush greenery and a friendly atmosphere, as well as sustainability at its core? Take a look at Ecolodge L’Etoile d’Argens, a dog-friendly wildlife haven 10 minutes’ drive from the beach in Fréjus and 45 minutes from both St Tropez and Cannes. The site is part of a 16-hectare wooded estate created in 1968 on a former agricultural property in the Var. Nowadays, the new owners (who have been running things since 2016) have created a friendly Mediterranean vibe with sustainable features and modern facilities including bike rental, a food shop and an aquatic area with two swimming pools, two hot tubs, one intermediate pool and two kids’ paddling pools. Grab some local and organic eats from the bar-restaurant, then head out on a bike ride, snorkelling excursion or river shuttle ride over the river Argens to get to Esclamandes beach (in high season only and for an additional charge). Families should be well entertained, as the site’s entertainment team runs shows, concerts and quizzes in the evenings. By day, there's a kids' club (for ages four and up) and a teens' club, which run between July and August. Other family-friendly facilities include tennis courts, pétanque courts, a miniature golf course, multi-sports ground, ping pong tables, a hairdresser and a playground. Activities include yoga lessons, archery, gym and fitness sessions, massages and local discovery walks to spot Mediterranean species.

Local attractions

Fréjus (10 minutes’ drive) is likely to be your first stop – and quite possibly your main focus for much of your time here. The beach is its best-known feature: it’s a long sandy stretch with public areas and equipped private sections, plus plenty of beachside restaurants and bars and places to hire watersports kit. There’s more to the town than just its beach though – the centre is well worth a wander too, taking in the colourful houses, the 12th-century cathedral and the Hong Hien Tu Pagoda. The family-friendly amusements of Luna Park, the waterslides of Aqualand Fréjus and the animal attractions of Parc Zoologique de Fréjus are handy options if you’ve got kids to entertain. If you don’t mind travelling a little further, there are plenty more things to keep you busy along this stretch of coast, including the beaches at Esclamandes (15 minutes’ drive), which has kitesurfing activities and a nudist section, and Le Dramont (half an hour), where you can see remnants of the World War II landings. To add a touch of glamour to your holiday, try a day out in the smart resorts of Saint-Tropez or Cannes (both 45 minutes).

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch (XL)

Liked: Plenty of room for the motorhome, the facilities not brilliant but adequate. Swimming pool and restaurant area was excellent.

Disliked: Not good if you have dogs and no tow car as you are a long way away from the town. Site not great if you have dogs really. Beer expensive at 10euros and site gets very muddy when it rains. No hand washing facilities in the toilets

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Reception staff. Restaurant. Shower and toilet block and it's cleanliness. The number of shower facilities. Pool area. The lengthy walk around the site and river .

Disliked: Pitch was terrible and as a 5 star site really should feel embarrassed on the state and position of the pitch. 2 families were kindly escorted to the pitch next to us by staff on a buggy but on seeing the pitch they refused to stay. I unfortunately did not receive this service. I actually spoke to 1 family and I was kindly thanked for my advice and no doubt they probably had a lovely stay. It appears to me that you will need to book the extra large pitches where you will be shaded kindly throughout the day .This is essential as our car read 46 degrees on the one day and we had no cover to relieve us of this heat during the day and evening. Should you book the extra large pitch I think you may be assured that you will not be situated on a pitch which is thick with dust, dry mud and a concrete mix from the recent renovations of the new ecolodges and in addition to a leaky water pipe which may have added the mosquito problem. The area where tent pitches are given are used as car parking places for the ecolodges which sometimes does cause a problem when new holiday makers arrive and attend their pitch. It is a shame we suffered this experience as I feel it could have been a lovely holiday but obviously having a deplorable pitch does affect any stay. I did try to rent an extra large pitch and it is now of no surprise to me that these pitches were sold out when I tried to book. You can have a lovely stay here but whether you may need to book direct with ecolodge and request may be better. I actually states in my booking , 2 preferences , shaded and quiet unfortunately I only got the 1 request and that due to the fact it looked like a building site . I would book again but only if I could guarantee the above pitches .

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The pool. Boat shuttle to the beach. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean modern toilet and shower blocks

Disliked: The campsite is huge, completely a personal opinion, but that's not my style. Also the putch itself was fine, a good size and shade for most of the day. Unfortunately the access to the pitches is very narrow and so difficult to manoeuvre ( myvan is6.2 metres) and so when we were leaving I had to ask 2 people opposite to move their cars so I could get out.. Also because it's so dry and dusty anyone else driving past had to drive across the dust at the front of our pitch because the cabins opposite didn't have much room to park their cars, so we were left breathing in the dust- and left with everything covered in dirt. Also, not too sure what the Eco but was about- never saw a solar panel, or anything very eco! So overall a pleasant few days, but it's not the site for me
