If rubbing shoulders with the rich and powerful, staying active on water and land, and proximity to French Riviera beaches are dream hols material, let the wind blow you towards Camping Site de Gorge Vent, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the port town of Fréjus in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The site’s a French institution that’s been around for more than 50 years and it’s easy to see why: there’s a fab waterpark with slides and inflatables for splashing times (plus a paddling pool for littler kids and poolside loungers for grownups who just want to bask under the Mediterranean sun), beach volleyball and water polo for competitive types, and pétanque for leisurely days. There’s even more to do during high season, when the kids’ club kicks into high gear with makeup classes, painting, games, crafts and treasure hunts, and when evenings are filled with hypnosis and cabaret acts, one-man shows and karaoke. Stuck for something to do while the kids are away? There’s a wellbeing area with spa, hot tub, massages, and body and beauty treatments, so head there to unwind and de-stress. Speaking of treats, there’s no need to leave site for local eats: there’s a snack bar serving crêpes (as well as sandwiches and ice cream), a bar-restaurant serving mussels (and loads more, of course) for lunch and dinner, and (during high season) a bread service for nabbing fresh bread and pastries every morning. Wash all of that down with wine or a cocktail on the bar terrace before the evening’s entertainment gets going.

Local attractions

Start hols with explores of Fréjus, about five minutes’ drive from the site – pop into the archaeological museum, poke around the old Roman ruins or head towards the coast for sandy strolls, leisurely swims and some watery activities such as windsurfing, jetskiing, sailing and diving. That’s not the only way to stay active either: there are plenty of spots for rock climbing in and around Fréjus, and the Estérel Massif is about 25 minutes away if hiking and biking more fits the bill. The site’s also around half an hour from the edge of Préalpes d’Azur Regional Nature Park, so there are lots more trails within easy reach… This is a particularly swanky part of France, so scoot along the coast to Saint Tropez, Cannes, Nice or (and?) Monaco to spy some celebs and well-to-do types, and stick around these pretty coastal spots for markets, castles, casinos, cruises and wineries. For days among animals, wander to the zoo 10 minutes from base or swim over to Marineland in Antibes, where there are aquariums, a Wild West Farm, a water park and adventure golf.
