  • Family-run site 20 minutes’ walk from the Provençal village of Barjols
  • Half an hour’s drive from Quinson and the lower Verdon Gorge
  • Eco-friendly, with shared outdoor spaces and breakfasts available
Plotting a getaway to Provence, perhaps to see the limestone cliffs of the Verdon Gorge, turquoise lakes and pretty villages framed by mountains? La Mauvaise Herbe makes a splendid base for all this, as it’s just a 20-minute walk away from the village of Barjols… which could only be described as exceptionally pretty, being set on a limestone cliff, surrounded by the Var hills, and home to waterfalls, fountains and traditional stone houses. The site is in a peaceful spot, carefully decorated and full of greenery. A shared outdoor space has been set up for guests to gather in, with outdoor seating and a kitchen. Supplies can be gathered at the small supermarket 15 minutes’ walk away. And when you’re not taking on the role of chef, there are plenty of restaurants in the village to fall back on. Breakfasts with soft bread, fresh fruit and other tasty bits can also be ordered on site. Adventures come in all different forms in this part of France, but the top priority for many guests at La Mauvaise Herbe is seeing the Verdon Gorge, Europe’s largest canyon, famed for its tall limestone cliffs and turquoise shimmer. The lower gorge is half an hour’s drive away; a good place to begin your adventure is Quinson, from which you can canoe or pedal boat over to Lake Esparron. There's plenty more to see, of course, whether it's turquoise lakes like Quinson Lake (half an hour’s drive away) and the Lake of Sainte-Croix (40 minutes) or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (an hour), one of the official Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Walks and bike rides begin directly from the site, so you don't always need to go far.

Local attractions

Those who are keen to spend as much time outdoors as possible will have no problem doing so in this scenic part of the country. A hike to kick things off? Point de Départ du Sentier Blanc-Martel (an hour and 40 minutes’ drive) is considered one of those must-do-at-least-once walks, winding for 16 kilometres through the dramatic cliffs of the Verdon Gorge. If climbing’s your thing, you’re in a fortunate position too – the steep limestone slopes of Vallon Sourn (15 minutes) are ever so popular with experienced climbers. Some museum time can always help you to get to know the area better. The Museum of Prehistory of the Gorges du Verdon (half an hour) in Quinson should be a nice intro, with its prehistoric village. There are walks or watersports activities along the Verdon river from Quinson, so there's plenty to get stuck into once you're done browsing – photo albums will surely be full afterwards.
