If you’re off to Aups, in the Var region, it’s likely that you’re in search of outdoor time spent exploring some spectacular scenery: this village is, after all, in the Verdon Regional Natural Park and a handy location for getting out and about around the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur area. Hiking trails, scenic bike or motorbike rides and visits to pretty medieval villages are in plentiful supply around here – and on top of all that, the watersports hub Lac Sainte-Croix is about 20 minutes’ drive away and the stunning Gorges du Verdon (a must-visit for this area) can be reached in half an hour or so. Sound like your kind of place? Then take a look at Camping International Aups, a family-friendly site just outside the village and less than 10 minutes’ walk from its shops, restaurants, traditional market and truffle vendors. If you’ve overexerted yourself with the alfresco activities, it’s handy to note that there’s also a bar and restaurant on site to keep you fed and watered (and entertained with events, if you’re here on a summer evening). On the other hand, if you’ve still got energy to spare, you can put it to good use here at the fitness area, the multisports court, the pétanque court or the heated swimming pool with waterslides. There’s also a playground to keep the kids busy, and a hot tub where the grownups can relax after a busy day. Other useful bits here include wifi, a launderette, a bread order service and a well-equipped bathroom block with baby bathroom, disabled access and nifty self-cleaning toilets.

Local attractions

There’s no better way to get your bearings than to take a wander around Aups – giving yourself a chance to get to know the local flavours by stopping in at Maison De La Truffe truffle museum (10 minutes’ walk) and the Moulin Gervasoni olive oil mill (15 minutes). For a bit more flavour-based exploration, continue on to Château Thuerry (15 minutes’ drive) for a spot of wine sampling. If your tastes skew more towards the cultural and historic side, stroll around the sculpture park at Faykod Museum (10 minutes) or check out the ceramics for sale in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (35 minutes). And whatever you do, don’t forget to leave time to see some of that stunning scenery nearby. The castle and waterfall walk in Sillans-La-Cascade (10 minutes) make a good place to start, and there are more watery views to take in while you swim, climb or try out the watersports at Lac de Sainte-Croix (20 minutes). The Gorges du Verdon (half an hour) are something of a must-see too: France’s deepest gorge is spectacular indeed.
