  • Friendly, family-run Buëch site with mountain views and pine forest
  • A 10-minute drive to Veynes and 25 minutes to Gap
  • Tennis courts, playground and bar on site; barbecues allowed
Off into the mountains you go… if climbing, hiking and cycling your way down the slopes sounds like your idea of a great holiday, then Camping Mon Repos may fit the bill nicely. Join the folk of the mountain village of Montmaur in the Buëch region and admire the freshness of the air up high… and end your days gazing at clear constellations in the sky. Based in an agricultural valley preserved since 1958, with a pine forest on one side and a meadow on the other, this 25-acre wildlife haven welcomes dogs and families. Run by a family, there are plenty of friendly faces to point you in the direction of mountain biking, fishing and climbing nearby, and plenty of cycling or hiking trails. Pick a plot among grassy and shaded pitches… and behold how the southern slope of the limestone massif of Dévoluy rises from the ground in the distance. There’s a reason this site is named ‘my rest’… it's a most peaceful spot among mountain views, but you’ll have an outdoor playground and tennis courts on site if you need a bit more activity. Fancy a snack on the go? Pick up supplies from the local town Veynes (10 minutes’ drive away), with shops, supermarkets and a bank, and plenty more in the capital city of the Hautes-Alpes, Gap, a 25-minute drive away. Alternatively, you can dine in at a restaurant in Veynes and test the local cuisine. Keep an eye on the time and make sure you’re back before dark for a barbecue under the mountains, followed by a beer from the on-site bar, ready to stargaze the evening away.

Local attractions

There are more than just views to be found in the mountains. Test your grip strength in the climbing hotspots on the rocky faces of Céüse (25 minutes’ drive) or dare to brave the mountain pass at Col du Noyer… will it be by foot or bicycle? If you want to go higher towards the clouds, take the cable car to Pic de Bure (50 minutes), where an observatory will show you the sights in higher resolution. For watery views, Lac de Serre-Ponçon (an hour) is further afield, but worth the journey. This is a real mecca for lake swimming, hiking and watersports all in one, and a place where you can dare yourself to tick off all the bays in one day. Dont' forget the indoors, though. In Gap, the Prefectural Museum (30 minutes) will help you delve into the cultural history of the region.

Liked: We liked the easy atmosphere, and the ambiance. Staff were friendly and helpful. It was a no-frills stay, which suited us. Really quiet, and tranquil. Everything was clean and tidy. Definitely revisiting next year!

Disliked: Our pitch was a little unlevel.
