  • Peaceful Provence site in the forest five minutes' drive from Peynier
  • Aix-en-Provence and Sainte-Victoire mountain within a half-hour drive
  • Swimming pool, playground and bar on site; access to forest trails
Forest hikes? City strolls? Seaside days? You’ll be able to mix and match as you go along when you stay at Camping le Devançon, a relaxed family-friendly site about five minutes’ drive from the town of Peynier. This is a lovely little spot in the Provence countryside, with woodland all around and easy access to forest trails. It’s also in a great location for exploring the trails of Sainte-Victoire mountain or the streets of Aix-en-Provence, both of which are within a half-hour drive. Getting to the coast should be easily done as well, with Marseille, Cassis, La Ciotat and a good handful of beaches and coastal scenery about 40 minutes’ drive away. All of this points to the idea that you should probably stay here for as long as possible to make the most of the area’s many attractions. That said, this is also a handy spot if you’re just passing through for a night or two to break up a long journey, as it’s fairly close to where the A8 and A52 meet. However long you’re staying, and however you fill your days, you should find this a chilled-out place to stay, with just enough facilities to keep you busy but no noisy entertainment to distract from the Provençal peace. The swimming pool and paddling pool are open in high season, and the site also has a playground, a pétanque court, table tennis and a small bar where you can sample local wines. A launderette, picnic area and bathrooms are all on site, and the whole place is accessible to guests with reduced mobility.

Local attractions

Close to the site there are various forest trails to follow, along with a ‘fitness’ course where you can add a bit more of a challenge to your day. Local villages and towns like Trets (10 minutes’ drive), Roquevaire (20 minutes) and Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (25 minutes) are nice places to wander around as well. Meanwhile, greater challenges await at the trails around Sainte-Victoire mountain (20 minutes). A day in Aix-en-Provence (half an hour, or catch the bus from Peynier) might include visiting the Atelier Cézanne, the Vasarely Foundation and several other museums, or it might simply involve wandering through the atmospheric streets and sampling local food in the markets. Marseille (40 minutes) is another good option, for a stroll in the historic Le Panier district, a visit to the MuCEM museum and a boat trip along the Blue Coast. Also down at the coast you could tour the Calanques National Park (50 minutes), explore coves and cinematic history in La Ciotat (35 minutes) or visit the château, beaches and harbour in Cassis (35 minutes).
