Keen to spend some time soaking up the scenery, sounds and scents of rural Provence? Maybe you’re all set for active adventures like hikes, watersports and climbing? Or perhaps you’ve got your eye on outings to some of the area’s top spots – Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and the like? If any of these – or indeed all of these – appeal, book yourselves in at Bastide Virginie, a small, simple and dog-friendly rural site about a kilometre from the little village of Le Tholonet. The peaceful pitches here are tucked away among olive and pine trees, making it a fabulously fragrant setting. As it’s accessed via a country lane, you’ll be much more likely to hear the song of the cicadas here than the rumble of passing traffic. You’ll be well situated for all sorts of outdoor activities here, as you’ll be at the foot of Sainte-Victoire mountain and close to both the Zola Dam and Lac de Bimont. Meanwhile, Aix-en-Provence is about 10 minutes’ drive away and you can get to Marseille and the coast in half an hour or so. Life on site is very simple – there are just a handful of pitches here, and basic facilities stretch to a dry toilet and a cool-water hose shower. The tradeoff is plenty of space to set up your awning, outdoor chairs and other kit so you can enjoy the peaceful setting in comfort. The village has a couple of restaurants and there are plenty of shops and other amenities in Aix-en-Provence.

Liked Der Platz liegt mitten in den Pinienwäldern der Provence. Es ist alles sehr naturbelassen und ruhig. Entsprechend einfach sind auch die Sanitäranlagen: Plumsklo und Duschschlauch in einer Bretterbude. Für uns war es ok, weil wir alleine dort waren. Der Besitzer war nett und hilfsbereit.

Disliked Die Zufahrt ist nicht einfach und es war nicht sofort zu finden.

La description de mon modeste camping précise bien qu’il y a des toilettes sèches et que la douche est avec un tuyau d’arrosage.
Et il y a de l’eau pour ce rincer mais il faut ouvrir le robinet.
Si vous aviez regardé les photos sur pitch up des emplacements vous auriez peut être passé votre chemin pour un camping beaucoup plus propre et aseptisé.
Ce que je vous invite à faire c’est de bien lire les descriptions et de bien regarder les photos avant votre prochaine réservation pour vous éviter les surprises.

Liked Bit of a shock to the system 😁

Disliked It's a bit primitive and scruffy. Shared composting toilet and single shower constructed from plastic sheets and pallets, fed by a garden hosepipe. No WiFi, toilet disposal or grey water dump. End of a narrow lane and tight manoevering

Liked I love the calmness of a semi rural environment, sitting in a dappled sunlight in the middle of an olive field. Toilets and shower were very close and the man running it was a delight. As his English wasn’t too good, it gave me an opportunity to practice my friend too. Apparently, there are some bars within a short walk, but I never went there.

Disliked It’s hard to put dislikes as you get what you pay for. The shower was a cold hose, which wasn’t a problem as the weather was so hot. If you want freshwater, you have to ask the owner and he will bring you some bottles, which was fine. There are no other services there, because it’s real France.

This is a strategic location for hikers, as you’ll be just a few minutes’ walk from a trail taking you to a Sainte-Victoire mountain viewpoint, walks at the Cascade du Tholonet and the scenic Route de Cezanne (passing the pretty Cézanne windmill). You can also walk to Zola Dam in about half an hour, or set off to Lac de Bimont (25 minutes’ drive) for more watery views. Not into walking? There are places nearby for mountain biking and climbing too. For a different day out, head into Aix-en-Provence (10 minutes’ drive) to wander among the gorgeous streets of the Old Town, popping in to local shops, browsing the markets and seeking out cool little cafés. Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.
