Fresh mountain air, easy beach access and the glitz and glamour of Monaco within a 45-minute drive – there's a winning combo on offer at this well-kept Alpes-Maritimes site. Roll up here to this spot a couple of kilometres from Sospel for family-friendly (and dog-friendly) hols in green surrounds. Oh, and there's a fab outdoor pool to sweeten the deal even further… This part of France is renowned for its weather, making the area around Sospel a top spot indeed for sunny French hols. You'll never forget you're right in the middle of the countryside here, with mountain vistas all around to encourage relaxing and unwinding. Proper wilderness is within reach as well: Camping Le Mas Fleuri is on the edge of Mercantour National Park and about an hour's drive from the high peaks of the Valley of the Marvels. The park is well-equipped for family-friendly times: there's a play area for clambering kids, a bar and restaurant serving up fresh drinks and tasty grub, and a pétanque court where you can perfect your underarm throws. In the high season, this site has all-singing, all-dancing evening entertainment (and yes, that's meant literally – the after-dinner ents at Camping Le Mas Fleuri get everybody boogying). Need a supermarket? The centre of Sospel (five minutes' drive) has well-stocked food shops, as well as riverside walks along the Bévéra that are rather easy on the eye.

Local attractions

Roaming along the Riviera is a splendid way to spend the day. The beaches and marinas at Menton (35 minutes' drive) and Monaco (45 minutes) host a well-heeled crowd through the summer months (if you fancy a pop at outspending them, try raising some cash at one of the local casinos). Èze (45 minutes) has a rather different vibe, with medieval architecture and a pretty pebble beach. Mountaineering more your thing? Head out into the Mercantour National Park. Horse trekking is particularly easy to sort – there's a top equestrian centre a couple of hundred metres from the site gates. There's also the chance to hire mountain bikes (five minutes' drive) and to try gliding or canyoning (head to Sospel tourist office for more info). These hills are also full of history: Sospel's Fort Saint Roch (five minutes) is one of the best-preserved bits of the WWII Maginot Line, while the remains of Piène's medieval château are worth climbing up to as well. For something a little different, head 45 minutes down the road to the Nativity museum (Musée de la Crèche) – as you'll find out, this area really goes in for elaborate Christmas decor…
