  • Safari tents at a small-scale site on the banks of the Ubaye river
  • Close to lots of rafting centres, plus climbing and horse riding
  • Bar, heated pool and swimming pond with beach area
Any idea why this place might have gained the name Camping River? The obvious answer is indeed correct here: Villatent at Camping River is right on the banks of the Ubaye river, 15 minutes’ drive from Méolans-Revel in the lovely Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. That riverside setting means not only fine views but also great access to the rapids for adrenaline-spiked days of rafting. You can’t swim in the river here, so instead plan to take your dips at the little heated pool or head to the pond, which has safe swimming water, a boat to play around with and a sandy beach area to relax on. This is a small-scale site with a peaceful vibe that’s boosted by the lack of cars (they have to be parked outside the site). It’s also a place where life has been made easy for guests, who stay in fully-equipped safari tents with beds made up and plenty of kitchen kit. If you don’t fancy cooking, there's food on offer alongside drinks at the bar, which also has a bread ordering service, a pretty terrace looking out over the river, and a wifi connection so you can send pics out to those back home. The mountainous area around the site is something of a playground for those who love a bit of outdoor activity: as well as rafting, you can also have a go at mountain biking, horse riding, climbing, abseiling and gliding in the area. (It’s also worth noting that there’s an average of 300 days of sunshine per year… although it can get chilly in the evenings, so do bring a jumper or two.)

2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: We loved our stay at this lovely campsite. The Villatent was comfortable and really well presented. Excellent quality throughout. Comfortable beds, and spaces you could really enjoy, whatever the weather was doing. Plenty for the kids to do too. David and Claire are terrific hosts, warm, friendly and there to help. Would definitely return.

2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Unbelievable views , the campsite hosts who are so friendly ( David makes the best Irish coffee if you ask him !) … the home cooked pizzas by wonderful Claire … the spotlessly clean toilet, shower and washing up areas ( 5* service from the cleaner !!) , the surrounding areas to explore, this campsite is a great base to visit many areas , great hiking, rafting and cycling opportunities around , the view from the campsite outdoor dining area , would have no hesitation in recommending this site and hope to visit again one day !… the tent we stayed in was fabulous too ! Comfy bed and well stocked kitchen ( utensils) !

Disliked: Nothing !!!!

Local attractions

Don’t worry if you don’t know where to start with the outdoor activities – there are plenty of activity centres around here that can help you sort your days out, and provide you with all the kit and instruction you need. Barcelonnette (15 minutes’ drive) is a good place to hunt out such things, and it’s got a good golf course too for those who fancy something a little easier-going. For family days out, try the treetop courses at Le Parc des Écureuils (20 minutes), meet the marmots and big birds at Serre-Ponçon Animal Park (20 minutes) or fling yourselves across the inflatable assault course at Aquaparc Embrun (40 minutes). If the kids have got a head for history (or you think they should), take them to roam around the Vauban citadel in Seyne-les-Alpes (half an hour) or aim for Musée de la Vallée - La Sapinière (15 minutes), which has some good displays about local lifestyles of the past.
