  • Family-friendly site two kilometres from medieval Castellane
  • Swimming pool, restaurant and activities programme
  • Close to hiking, cycling and canoeing in the Gorges du Verdon
Wherever you live in the world, a trip along (and over) France's Gorges du Verdon needs to be near the top of your travel list. Running for 25 kilometres in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence at a depth of up to 700 metres, the Verdon gorge is so spectacular it's been given the moniker of Europe's Grand Canyon: you'll see why when you get there. What luck then to be able to base oneself at Camping Terra Verdon in Provence, for it's two kilometres from the medieval town of Castellane, the start of one of the most lush parts of the gorge as it cuts into the limestone between Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. The hiking, biking, fishing, climbing and canoeing of the gorge are easily accessed within 15 kilometres of the site, and spectacular Lac de Castillon is five kilometres away. The Camping Terra Verdon team organises family hikes around this region in summer, or you can hire electric scooters to explore the paths and mountain trails. Family activities also run in summer, including archery, sports tournaments and a kids' club. Among the other leisure facilities are a heated pool, a playground, and a sports court added in 2017 for padel tennis, pétanque and kids' games. There's also a restaurant serving Provençal dishes to eat in or take away, and a mini market selling groceries and other essentials. Barbecues are allowed on site.

Local attractions

Within a 15-kilometre drive, access the Gorges du Verdon on its right bank from the north for days' or weeks' worth of hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, canoeing and rafting, or paragliding and ballooning above its spectacular setting. Canyoning is also a popular pastime here, along with climbing around the gorge's 1,500 limestone routes. Several other options are within five kilometres, including the Citroën Museum half a kilometre away, medieval Castellane (two kilometres), Adventure Forest treetop adventure course (four kilometres) and canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing and paddleboarding on Lac de Castillon (five kilometres). Paragliding – and lessons – are available at Saint-André-Les-Alpes 20 kilometres away, a town so scenic it was once home to the World Cup paragliding championships. If you'd rather stay firmly on ground thanks very much, viewsome hikes are around here too, leaving the town to climb up to the valley's peaks. You could also have peaceful days around the region's Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, including Moustiers (22 kilometres), Seillans (25 kilometres) and Tourtour (35 kilometres).
