  • Peaceful riverside site just outside Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé
  • A 20-minute drive from the thermal spas of La Roche-Posay
  • Bike and canoe rental available on site
If you’re one of those (sensible) types who fancies a peaceful rural retreat but still wants to be within easy ambling distance of restaurants, shops and the like, sort yourself a stay at Vienne's Camping Le Grand Pré. The peace and quiet part of the equation comes to you courtesy of the setting, between ancient cliffs and the Gartempe river; meanwhile, a 10-minute stroll from the site is the little village of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé, home to a restaurant, café and grocery store plus the obligatory bakery. Should you require further urban amenities, there are more restaurants (along with some scenic woods and river views) in Angles-sur-l’Anglin, 10 minutes away by car. A bit further afield, it's around 20 minutes' drive to historic wanderings through the medieval streets of Chauvigny or warm-water wallowing at the famed thermal baths in La Roche-Posay. Or get prepped to get climbing: Le Grand Pré is 10 minutes' drive from the popular rock climbing site of La Guignoterie. Facilities on site are kept to a minimum to maintain the peaceful vibe, but there's plenty of space for the small sorts to run about, and various useful amenities to make life easy: bike hire, canoe hire, a barbecue area and a small shop.

What customers say

This well-maintained campsite, praised for its peaceful atmosphere and spacious pitches, is situated in a lovely location a short walk from a traditional French village. Guests frequently highlight the exceptional friendliness and helpfulness of the owners, Patrick and Lynda. Facilities are consistently described as very clean, with particular mention of the spotless toilets and showers. The option to order fresh bread and croissants daily is a popular convenience. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few guests noted the shower block's age and darkness, and one instance of a cold shower was reported. No significant dislikes were noted by most visitors.

Local attractions

Get out and explore by hiring a bike or canoe from the site; friendly reception staff can also give you details of hikes both gentle and strenuous. There are some comely little fishing spots along the Gartempe river and the nearby Anglin, and more than 100 routes for experienced climbers along the limestone cliffs around Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé. Drive up to Angles-sur-l’Anglin (10 minutes), to potter about in the pretty village and to wander around the ruins of its hilltop fortress and see the prehistoric carvings in the Roc-aux-Sorciers cave. If you’re partial to a castle or two, fit in a trip to Chauvigny, where there are five to pick from (or visit them all on a castle crawl). La Roche-Posay, a 20-minute drive from the site, is the place to visit for a golf course, horse racing and thermal spa sessions. Even if you’re not actually heading into the baths, the Parc Thermal is a handsome place to wander around, with its gardens divided into themed areas. If the kids demand to up the adrenaline levels somewhat, the fab Futuroscope theme park is 45 minutes’ drive away.
