What’s your watery preference? Launching a fishing boat or canoe on a river mere metres from your pitch? Splashing about in an indoor pool and zipping down the waterslides of an on-site aqua park? Or how about gurgling relaxedly among the healing waters of an ancient spa town?
If, like us, you’re answering ‘All of them, ta very much’, then felicitations, Camping La Roche-Posay is the site pour vous.
This family-friendly Vienne park is within walking distance of the ancient spa town La Roche-Posay, visited for centuries because of the healing properties of its thermal spa waters. Legend has it that the springs were discovered at the end of the fourteenth century when a sickly horse fell in and was immediately cured; whether that’s a petite exaggeration or not, it’s a vrai fact that Napoleon set up a thermal hospital here for his soldiers (not horses) at the beginning of the nineteenth century; the springs are now world famous.
A free shuttle bus runs from the campsite to the spa; once you’re back, all rejuvenated and ruddy-cheeked, submerge yourself among the pools and slides of the water park (with separate area for the toddlers to stay relaxingly unsquashed), or on a rare rainy day, wallow around the heated covered pool. Or take a boat out to fish or a canoe to paddle: Camping La Roche-Posay is on the banks of the river Creuse, which runs for over 260km should you be so inclined.
On land, kids can dive into the regular activities and the new adventure playground, and we think that water fans and landlubbers alike will say ahoy to the poolside terrace bar with snacks and takeaway.
La locale is très superb too: Camping Les Roche-Posay is edged by superb French regions such as the Touraine with its many chateaux; historic Poitou-Charentes (capital Poitiers is within 40km) and the longest river in France, in the Loire Valley. We recommend arriving here from a certain famous English spa town – one could easily have a Bath in both…
The campsite is located 1.5 km outside the spa town of La Roche-Posay. The town also offers a lovely medieval centre and a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops.

Local attractions
Visitors flow to the la belle medieval town of La Roche-Posay, 1.5km from the park, for a lot more than the springs: the l'Hippodrome de la Gâtinière racecourse has meets over the summer and if you’d like to do a bit more betting, a town casino and an 18-hole golf course are in the town too (doesn’t everyone bet on golf?). A riding school and fitness centre are also nearby.
As well as the Creuse, canoeists can launch their crafts from several places in the Loire Valley: the river Anglin, flowing south to the Brenne Regional Park; the Gertempe and the leisure centre at Saint Cyr, which has canoe and kayak hire. The Loire Valley as a whole is well-known for watersports of all kinds; sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing and more are available at many of the valley’s lakes and rivers.
Les châteaux of the Loire Valley are rightly world famous and Camping Les Roche-Posay has easy access to several. The Royal Fortress of Chinon, where Joan of Arc met the future Charles VII, has interactive exhibits for visitors to immerse themselves in the life of fifteenth century France; Château d'Ussé or Sleeping Beauty’s Castle is verily fairytale; and the Château of Azay-le-Rideau on the River Indre is one of the most-visited châteaux in the region. The Amboise Royal Château is also nearby and part of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On a different theme, tech-based amusement park Futuroscope is 30 minutes’ drive away and is a bien day out for kids of all sizes with its IMAX cinemas, rides and buildings looking like they’re from the next century (bring a picnic; there are plenty of green spaces to lounge around too). Around an hour away, the conservation-friendly ZooParc de Bauval has species from Africa, Australia and around the globe, a daily show and a prideful amount of big cats.
