  • Family-friendly camping at Sireuil on the banks of the Charente river
  • Angoulême 20 minutes’ drive, and Cognac distilleries 35 minutes
  • Swimming pool; watersports on the river; snack bar and entertainment
If you’re looking for some sporting action in the Charente region, consider hunkering down at family-friendly Camping du Nizour on the outskirts of Sireuil. Set in nearly five acres of rambling, tree-shaded parkland, the site is a few steps away from the banks of the Charente river for fishing, kayaking or pedal-boat adventures, and close to the Flow Vélo cycle track (five minutes’ walk) as it hugs the river on its way to the Atlantic coast. But there’s loads to keep families busy without leaving the site at all; a swimming pool, tennis and pétanque courts, and kids’ playground for starters, as well as games including billiards, table football, darts, shuffleboard… and during high season things really ramp up with themed evening entertainment, karaoke and dancing. If cooking’s off the agenda (you’re on holiday after all), nip into the terraced snack bar for a menu of regional cured meats and other tempting dishes – and how about rounding off your meal with a cognac from a local Charente vineyard? When you fancy a change of dining scene, all bars and restaurants in hilltop Angoulême are 20 minutes’ drive away.

Electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: The seclusion! Given the time of year there was only one other van on the pitches. The pitches are in woodland close to the Charente. Most of the facilities ( shop, bar, pool etc) were not open or were in the process of being renovated. This was the case for the showers and toilets but they were clean and spacious and I wish the owners well in their development plans.

Local attractions

First stop may well be gorgeous Angoulême (20 minutes’ drive), a designated City of Art and History as well as the world capital of comics. The National Comic Strip and Image Centre has oodles of original cartoons on show, while the shops and cafés of the hilltop old town are fun to explore on foot. The city’s culinary heart is the Marché des Halles, worth a visit at lunch time to cobble together a picnic of fresh bread, local cheeses and organic tomatoes. Another pretty pitstop is Cognac (35 minutes), with mellow-stoned 17th-century houses giving way to ornate Belle Epoque architecture in the town centre. Book a tour and tasting at a big cognac house like Rémy Martin or Martell, or taste the local Pineau des Charentes liqueur in a pavement café. If the kids are getting twitchy at all this sightseeing, placate them with horse riding or a run around at Eden Paintball (both 10 minutes).
