Small, friendly family site among hiking and cycling routes

Serene and green: that’s Camping & Gîtes En Campagne down to a tee: a spectacular site – see pics – in the pretty Charente region surrounded by woodland, fields and hills. It’s in a land of many hiking and biking routes, several of which can be started directly from the site (just take your pick from trails of five to 50 kilometres depending on your energy levels). For trips that aren’t about the get up and go, this is also a peaceful and laidback place that’s well set up for families, quiet countryside stays or older guests looking for a relaxed spot in low season where they can still socialise with others at the lounge corner or pétanque court. It's a fab spot for kids too: there's a good selection of toys as well as bikes for small sorts to play with and loads of well-kept space for running or roaming. Campfires are allowed (so juniors can proudly forage for fuel in the surrounding woodland) and they can scamper around a well-equipped playground with swings, slides, trampolines and a sandbox. A paddling pool (safely fenced off) is set alongside a big pool for the grownups. When kids and adults are wanting eats, the friendly owners hold a table d’hôte dinner twice a week on the terrace of the site restaurant; at other times, breakfast is available in the restaurant and guests can sizzle up supper on a campfire. Fresh bread, croissants and pain au chocolat are available every morning: just order the night before. The site’s closest commune is Saint-Christophe, five minutes’ drive away, large supermarkets et al are around a 20-minute drive and the owners have info on the nearest marché producteurs: markets selling local produce including meat, veg, cheese, snails and homemade cakes.

Local attractions

Ambles can be had straight from this site – try the four-kilometre walk to Butte Frochet and make your way to a quartz outcrop while taking in the cracking countryside views. For culture a short drive from base, the open-air museum Montrol-Sénard is a fab old French village that feels frozen in time. Historic hikes can also be had around Oradour-sur-Glane, 20 minutes away, where visitors can pay their respects at a martyr village commemorating 632 women, men and children killed by the German SS in June 1944. For lengthier days out, the start of the Availles-Limouzine 48-kilometre GR 48 trail to Rochechouart is a 30-minute drive, and canoeing trips on the Vienne river from Exideuil are also about 30 minutes away in the car.
