  • Peaceful English-run site five minutes' walk from Lac de Lavaud
  • A 45-minute drive to Limoges; an hour to Angoulême
  • A short walk from a lake beach, fishing and watersports rentals
Your Charente chillout spot awaits… La Petite Cachette is surrounded by gorgeous greenery and peaceful scenery, and – best of all – it’s only a five-minute walk from the shores of Lac de Lavaud, a sizeable lake spreading over about 500 acres. That splendid setting means this is a place where you could probably easily relax on site for quite some time, perhaps interspersing your siestas with plenty of time spent down at the lake – that short walk gets you to a public beach (with a beach bar for those all-important cool drinks…), a watersports hire place (for days of exploring by kayak or paddleboard) and several fishing spots. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little more than that, there are plenty of hiking and bike trails in the vicinity, and many more in the nearby Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, which has well over a thousand miles of marked trails. Or how about a city stroll? Both Limoges and Angoulême are within an easy hour’s drive from this site, so you’ll have the option of adding day trips to the mix if you like. If you need any advice on local places to go, ask on site – it’s run by an English couple who can dole out tips in either French or English as required. Back at the site, you’ll be able to clean up after whatever trips you’ve made at the shower/toilet block before settling in for your evening meal. You’re welcome to bring along a barbecue to help you cook said meal if you like; shops for all the necessaries are in Massignac (10 minutes’ drive) or Rochechouart (15 minutes), and there’s a bakery in nearby Pressignac (five minutes).

Disliked: The site was untidy there was leaves all over the site the owners can make an effort too clean up and move leaves too another area so you don’t have too walk over them all the time.Use a blower dig a big hole and make a compost heap with leaves . There was no facilities too dump your water and clean your toilet cassette.

Electric grass pitch

Local attractions

Lac de Lavaud will be your first port of call, surely – it’s got a sandy beach (with lifeguards in July and August), a miniature golf course, watersports rentals and places to fish (if you have the right licence). Bikes are available to rent if you’d like to explore on two wheels, and in summer there are horse riding lessons on offer too. There are lots of lovely landscapes to explore in the area – perhaps on one of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park’s many trails, or the vélorail, ziplines and treetop courses at Espace Hermeline (45 minutes’ drive). If you’d like to take in some historic sights too, then head to the likes of Château de Rochechouart, which houses a contemporary art museum, and the Roman site of Cassinomagus (both 15 minutes). Other outings might take you to explore medieval Confolens (half an hour), the porcelain makers of Limoges (45 minutes) or the museums and street art of Angoulême (an hour).
