  • Peaceful and family-friendly touring site in Charente countryside
  • Boating 20 minutes’ drive; Oradour-sur-Glane 40 minutes; Limoges 50
  • Communal seating and barbecues; bread delivery and essentials shop
There's a hint in the name – shaded by slender poplar trees, Camping Le Paradis really does feel like a little corner of heaven. Surrounded by greenery, the site is five minutes’ walk from sleepy Mareuil village in the rural Charente region, surrounded by vineyards (producing the grapes that go into Cognac wines) and seasonal sunflower fields. Whether you’re looking to refresh and recharge en route to Spain or are intending to bed down for a few days of sightseeing, Camping Le Paradis has several handy amenities to make your stay a relaxing one. Plunder the on-site library for books and DVDs for quiet times on long summer evenings, or share food and chat with fellow guests at the communal seating area near the barbecues. In the afternoon, a local baker visits the campsite with a variety of fresh bread and cakes, and there are locals of tempting restaurant options within 15 minutes’ drive. As far as practical details go, there’s a kitchen to take care of your washing up, and a laundry service carrying a small charge. You can also pick up touring essentials like LPG bottles from the on-site shop. And last up, there’s no need for any four-legged companions to miss out on your Charente jaunt. Dogs are very welcome, and you can exercise them in a securely fenced field.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Everything! This site is a great find! Such a lovely woodland spot. Great pitches, well laid out and privacy hedging around each plot. Dog walking/exercise area. Communal point with basic supplies, fab little library, wifi etc. Showers and toilets very clean and looked after. The owners are so helpful, nothing is to much trouble. The roof leaked on my camper and they let me stay in one of the empty site caravans so I got chance to get warm and dry!! They also helped me with the local vet to get my dogs return AHC sorted. Really helpful and couldn't fault my stay.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: What at welcome … it was dark and wet when we arrived, Jon could not have been more helpful. He assisted with erecting our awning and then offered us a drink! Through out our stay both Jon and Berni were on hand. What a lovely couple , would recommend to friends and family. We only had the opportunity to visit in the winter but would love to visit in the summer.

Disliked: If I had to be picky … the lack of a strong wifi was a problem especially as it was winter and the only signal was outside the office.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Jon and Bernie gave us a great welcome with a drink and introductory chat. Facilities have recently been upgraded and were very homely. Pitches were a really good size and the dog walking area was very welcome. Very quiet and remote.

Disliked: As we are both walkers it would have been helpful to have some walks available from the site.

Local attractions

For the active among you, Camping Le Paradis is close to the Lacs de Haute-Charente (20 minutes’ drive), where you can occupy the whole family with watery antics like sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and fishing. There are a couple of artificial beaches too, should you wish to cool off with a swim. Birdwatchers, be sure to bring the binoculars along for a chance to spot herons and coots among the reeds. For a sharp reminder of the horrors of war, wander deserted streets lined with crumbling houses at Oradour-sur-Glane (40 minutes), a preserved monument to a Nazi atrocity in 1944. On a lighter note, celebrate the skills of Limoges (50 minutes) craftsmen in the city’s fine porcelain museums and then retreat to the half-timbered Cour du Temple courtyard for a restorative shot of coffee. Have a meander around the streets of historic Cognac (15 minutes) and stroll alongside the Charente River to the striking stone Tour Saint Jacques. History dealt with, you can then get down to the serious business of touring and tasting at one of the town’s brandy distilleries.
