  • Peaceful 25-acre wooded site with a large fishing lake
  • A 20-minute drive to Château de la Rochefoucauld; 40 mins to Angoulême
  • Lake beach and waterside restaurant-bar with terrace
All the elements for a peaceful Poitou-Charentes break are in place at Camping de L’Étang, in a quiet spot 10 minutes' walk from Le Lindois and close to the borders of Haute-Vienne and Dordogne. Stay here and you’ll be on the edge of a five-acre lake, surrounded by tree-filled grounds that stretch out to almost 25 acres – that means plenty of space to relax in the shade of the century-old forest, as well as access to the lake’s waters for days of fishing. The lake also has a small sandy beach area for paddling and sunbathing time. Getting to know your surroundings should be easy, as you can start with a pretty walk that takes you along the lakeside and through the woods a little way. Once you’ve completed that, there are rewards in store at the restaurant, which has a lakeside terrace where you can relax with a drink or order meals made from fresh local produce and cooked on the grill. The restaurant also hosts live music and theme evenings. If you need a little more activity on site, you’ll be able to find that in the form of a playground, table tennis and pétanque. Or maybe it’s time to head out? It should be easy to find plenty of ways to fill days out around here, whether you’re in the mood for château tours, a wander around Angoulême (40 minutes’ drive) or outdoor activities like kayaking, tree-climbing and hikes in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Electric optional forest floor touring caravan pitch

Liked: The site for our 4 berth caravan was HUGE and quite level with very easy access and a view of the lake. There is a busy restaurant onsite which is very good value for money. We had fish and chips which was served at a rustic table overlooking the lake. The food was delicious but due to dietary problems (nothing to do with the site restaurant) we only ate there once. We would recommend Camping de L'Etang for a short or long break, good value for money. We didn't use the facilities apart from waste disposa/waterl which was convenient and clean. Only negative point was the Wifi which was very poor but you are in a forest so probably to be expected.

Disliked: The site dogs could be very boisterous but they were very tame, happy animals!

Local attractions

Being on the edge of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park means that all sorts of trails await for walkers and bike riders, and there are lots of other excellent ways to spend time in the open air, too. These might include a day of kayaking from Montbron (15 minutes’ drive), getting up into the treetops at Aventure Parc Lacs de Haute Charente (10 minutes) or a round at Golf International de la Prèze (10 minutes). If it’s a more leisurely outing that you’re after, take a stroll around Château de la Rochefoucauld (20 minutes), a stunning building that’s surely one of the best examples of the classic French castle style and packed with equally fabulous pieces of art and furniture. For an even wider view of the area’s history, follow up with trips to Cassinomagus Archaeological Park (25 minutes) and Memorial de la Resistance (20 minutes). On top of all of this, a trip to Angoulême (40 minutes) should be on the cards – the cathedral, ramparts and museum should keep history lovers happy for a while, and the Musée de la Bande Dessinée and various street murals may pique the interest of younger travellers.
