General

  • Small friendly site in a peaceful hamlet in south-west France
  • Supermarkets, food markets, bars, restaurants and shops within 10 mins
  • Pool, sun loungers, parasols and food shop

The owners of Camping La Forêt de Tessé in Charente picked a prime spot to settle in when they crossed from the UK over to south-west France: this is one of the sunniest regions in the land, and it's a cinch from here to get to top destinations around the south of France and on to Spain and Portugal.

Ildi and Mark left the UK to set up their own site in France, using the expert knowledge gleaned from many trips away in their motorhome. They picked the peaceful French hamlet of Grosbout as their spot – and jolly sensible too as you'll agree when you spy this rural setting... Old villages and châteaux are dotted around the region, easily reached by foot or bike around the country lanes, and it's all fably safe; the only traffic you'll see is the occasional car or tractor passing by...

But. Although this is a serenely rural area, it's within easy reach of pretty much everything you'll need on your French vacance. Supermarkets, food markets, bars, restaurants and shops are all within 10 minutes' drive, as is the N10 motorway; the A10 is half an hour away. (And for les enfants and/or the teens? Futuroscope is an hour away and the city of Angoulême, home to the world-famed Angoulême International Comics Festival, is within 45 minutes.)

The guest area of Camping La Forêt de Tessé is next to Ildi and Mark's house, on a level grass field with plentiful trees for shade and with picnic tables for alfresco eats all day. Guests have access to an outdoor pool, sun loungers and parasols for days on site, as well as a pétanque court at which to feel fully French.

Camping La Forêt de Tessé has a food shop, and barbecues are allowed.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

We went for 3 nights and stayed for 6 nights! Mark & Ildi were fantastic hosts nothing was too much trouble. The site was spotless and the pool a dream especially as the temp soared to 33 degrees. We will defund back.

Great site, very welcoming and friendly hosts. We stayed for a night on the way down to Bergerac from the Caen (campervan, 2 adults and kids aged 6+4). It’s a really nice quiet site for families or couples - pitches are flat, grass is well kept, the shower, toilet and kitchen facilities are excellent (better quality than at home!) and the other campers were all kind and friendly. We’d certainly stay there again for a bit longer as the area has interesting things to see, as well as having the normal France things of good cycle rides, pretty villages and markets.

We have found perfection it is a fantastic location a beautiful village not for to the shops the owners are excellent you couldn’t ask for more my truck broke down and Mark helped me out and he collects your bread order every morning if you wish
    The site is extremely clean
And even though I there is hard standing pitched the grass is amazing the ground is hard so no problems even when we had torrential down pours through the night it was dry in the morning and no mud what so ever
The grass and pitch area is exceptionaly level as well
The pool and wash room facilities are beautiful if your not coming through this area take a detour it is well worth it
It really is the best camping site we have ever found people come for one night and want to come back we also checked out the gite and the glamping tents we want to come back to stay in those as well there beautiful and in great positions
We walk around the village every day as it is probably the most beautiful village in France it is like stepping back to ww2 it’s stunning
The WiFi signal is very strong great for downloading films etc

Very welcoming and enjoyable stay, wish we had booked for longer. We arrived late for a stopover and were still able to order bread and access the heated pool, much to the relief of my kids (11,13 &15) after a very long drive, Brilliant site, clean amenities and friendly. I would have given it more than 5* if I could. Will be booking again.

Quiet, spotless campsite with spacious pitches and excellent facilities.
English speaking site owners were extremely pleasant, welcoming, helpful and accommodating and took a pastry and bread order every afternoon which was promptly delivered the following morning.
The pool area was beautiful and a nice place to sit and unwind. Never got too busy and often had it to ourselves during our stay!
A great, relaxing holiday, thank you! : )

From arrival to departure we couldn't have asked for friendlier helpful hosts. We were able to choose a spot that suited us and were given a tour of the facilities. Pool was so clean and warm as were the showers and toilets. We were given a book with a wealth of information about the local area and travel times from restaurants to chateaus in the area. As a small site everyone chatted and got on really well. Definitely one of my favourite sites.

We arrived late after a very long drive and I was actually a bit poorly. My granddaughter's husband was driving and the owner told us we could pitch up where we liked as long as we were near to an electric hook up. We had chosen this site as I have friends who live locally to it. The site is very spacious and there were several pitches already taken, a couple of English and others were Dutch but not sure of the rest. Everything was explained to my granddaughter and her 7 year old daughter, about Showers, Loos, Laundry, Waste disposal etc and on offer of bread etc for morning which we took up. The bread arrived in a large bag that we returned and when I, as a disabled person went over to the showers they were phenomenal! Truly the best showers I have ever encountered on a campsite ANYWHERE. Absolutely huge disabled shower and toilet with a very large seat for showering on and a wonderful powerful shower. A small bench as well as plenty of hooks to hang things. I would give this site 10 out of 5. it is superb and the owner deserves to prosper with it. They have one Gite and some Tepees with kingsize beds, Looked absolutely great, and were occupied. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in this region you could not do better than to stay here. I will definitely return.
We didn't use the WiFi I so cant comment on that but the owner did say that phone signals ares a bit dodgy and means you have to walk about a bit to get it right. It is definitely out in the sticks which I absolutely love.

Local attractions

Flip through the Welcome folder on site for info on local events as well as suggestions on what to see and do: there's rather a lot.

Top suggestions include the canoeing, summer swimming and kids' beach at Réjallant Ruffec, 15 minutes' drive away; the abbey and Arboretum of Nanteuil-en-Vallée, one of France's 'small towns of character' (20 minutes), or monkeying around at La Vallee des Singes, 35 minutes away. For something a tad different, canoe right down the river to Château de Verteuil, an 11th-century castle overlooking the Charente valley; it's 20 minutes away if you'd rather get there by car.

Further afield, Cognac, Chauvigny and the marshlands of the Marais Poitevin are all about an hour and quarter away, and La Rochelle an hour and 40 minutes.
