A la rivière… It’ll no doubt not surprise you one teeny tiny bit to find that Camping de la Rivière has a rather fine riverside setting. More specifically, this friendly Charente site is on the banks of the viewsome Vienne river in the village of Exideuil. The village is a fairly small place but big enough to sustain a few shops and restaurants; a supermarket is five kilometres away if you’re planning on picking up bits for a barbecue (the site owners have installed a barbecue area if you’ve not been able to lug your own). Want to put a bit less effort into sourcing your eats? Saunter over to the site’s restaurant (open between mid June and mid September) for local Limousin dishes (the steaks and mussels are both tiptop picks) or snacks to take away. Live bands often put in an appearance at the weekends in summer; tap your toes all you like but don’t forget to put in an order for next morning’s bread and croissants (petit dejeuner envy is a terrible thing…). Take advantage of your riverside setting by borrowing some of the site’s canoes or kayaks to venture out on the Vienne. It’s not really a swimming river, but handily there’s an outdoor pool for any dips you may like to take. A beach volleyball court, trampoline, pétanque court, table tennis and a pool table are among the other facilities that should keep the family entertained.

Nous avons apprécié les sanitaires propres, l'eau chaude et le papier toilette fourni sans les toilettes. Nous y avons également apprécié le fond musical (qui ne s'entend que lorsque l'on est dans le bâtiment)

Local attractions

Slip away from the river for a while and make a break for the lakes. A few minutes’ drive will get you to a little lake for swims and sunbathing on a sandy beach; stay on the road a little longer (15 minutes or so) to hit the Lacs de Haute Charente for more swims, watersports, horse rides and scenic walks and bike rides. Not brought bikes? Venture over to the vélorail in Roumazières (10 minutes away) to pedal special contraptions along a disused rail track through the woods; traditional train rides can be had here instead if you’d rather take in the views while giving your legs a rest. Stretch them out again on walks in the Périgord Limousin Regional Natural Park (20 minutes), or take them high in the air on the treetop trails at Tarz en Arbre adventure park, 40 minutes away. Safely back at ground level, there are several towns nearby that are worth a bit of your time: amble around Angoulême (45 minutes), keeping eyes open for decorative buildings and cartoons daubed on the city’s walls, or take off to Limoges (40 minutes) to peruse the porcelain collections in museums and shops.
