  • Family-run motorhome parking area on the edge of Confolens
  • Lac de Haute Charente 25 minutes’ drive; Angoulême an hour
  • Dogs welcome; electricity, water and drainage hook-up points on site
A pretty sweet site for anyone who’s been driving a motorhome through France and fancies a few days of rest and relaxation, ABC Camping Car sits on the outskirts of the medieval town of Confolens (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk to the centre), in the north-eastern reaches of the Charente department. There are quite a few things deserving of praise at this peaceful family-friendly (and family-run) service area for campervans: free access around the clock, for starters, no matter what time you roll up; plus facilities for disabled guests, and electricity, water and drainage hook-up points. The location puts you within easy access of a petrol station (always useful), a supermarket (half a kilometre away, or less than 10 minutes on foot) and assorted services, including a pharmacy and a police station (though hopefully you won’t need either during your holiday here…). Dotted with bakeries, cafés and restaurants, Confolens also has plenty of green areas along the Vienne, plus a large riverfront sports complex that includes tennis courts and a swimming pool with waterslides. You may like to spend some time walking the dog (a welcome guest at ABC) on the shaded trails skirting the Vienne, launch a canoe or get your hands on a fishing permit and cast a line for carp.

Liked: Nothing. Wish I could give zero stars

Disliked: Booker for 2 nights as wanted to be in that area. I paid nearly 14 euro for the 2 nights so I thought a bit cheaper then the camping car parks that I had been using at about 10 euro a night. The site was not as advertised at all. Didn't realise you had to pay for everything else as extra. Got there at about 3pm and had to call the number and they could hardly speak any English. Tried to explain that I had booked 2 nights and needed to come and go so they sent down someone with a key fob. The site is on a complete slope sideways so no flat pitches and it's on top of a 24 hour petrol station. I then had to pay a further 12 euro for 12 hour electric and water. I put the tokens in but no water. I phoned again and was told it was turned off in winter so I had no water whatsoever. I ended up having to go to the supermarket and put in bottled This was not stated anywhere on the site or on pitch up. After I put the tokens for the 12 hour electric it went out after an hour. I had to call again for someone to come in the dark to check what had happened. They had no idea so I was moved to different electric. I put the tokens in at 5pm which meant they ran out at 5am. I had no electric in the morning and I wasn't going yo buy more tokens for it either. I left and didn't stay the second night due to the expense. If I had wanted to spend the day on the site, it would have cost a fortune in tokens and still have no water. The whole system was a complete joke and worked out more expensive then staying on a camping car park or a campsite. I would not recommend this to anyone
