  • Scenic site on edge of a large lake in the Charente countryside
  • A 300-metre stroll from Bignac and easy driving access to the A10
  • Large pool, sports courts, wifi, play area, restaurant and fishing
Aimed at families and couples looking for a quiet and laidback holiday but with plenty of services and entertainment in high season, Camping du Lac de Bignac really does have the best of both worlds... Set over nine hectares and with a spectacular four-hectare lake, this site’s most definitely a sizeable and scenic place for Charente countryside stays. As well as longer breaks in the second-sunniest part of France, this park in the Poitou-Charentes (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) region to the country’s west is also well placed for stopovers to Spain or Portugal. It has easy access to the A10 and the toll-free N10 to get to and from ports as well as regional highlights like Angoulême, half an hour’s drive to the south, and Cognac, 45 minutes west. When you’re not perusing the paper museum and Saint-Pierre cathedral in the former town or sipping on the famed alcohol in the latter, plenty of entertainment’s on hand at the site. Sporty sorts might like to get active in the big pool or on the tennis, badminton and pétanque courts, while angling aficionados can get busy fishing on the lake. If you didn’t catch a creature for supper, the popular restaurant at the park might lure you in… Breakfast’s just as easily organised as dinner thanks to the daily bread and pastries delivery, plus a supermarket is just outside the local commune of Bignac about 300 metres away.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Excellent site with clean facilities and beautiful setting. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing. We stayed a few days with our two dogs. There was plenty of space for them to run that was away from the camping area. Our battery died on us but the owner was helpful speaking to our breakdown man and phoned to check a replacement battery was available at the nearest garage 30km away.

Disliked: 3km to the nearest supermarket by bike. Not a challenge for the fit and able and not for my husband but I’m a nervous cyclist. I believe there is a bread van who comes to the site in the high season but we visited April.

Liked: The people seemed nice

Disliked: It was literally a forest, no lights at all and so so many insects and bugs. We even saw rats, we had to leave and book a hotel

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A nice laid out campsite with shade and sunny pitches. Swimming pool looked good but we were there only a night so gave it a miss. Ordered bread and bits for the morning, staff were very nice. We had a problem with the electrics but a French camper helped, thank you. It might have been tripping due to a fault on my caravan but it was ok before…it was very hot though…. It could be a lot better, the lake needs some work , I have seen lots that are better. We would stay again They had a restaurant but we had to use up our supplies!!! Recommended by others though

Disliked: Nothing really

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A nice basic site with a good pool and a lake to walk around (great for dog owners). There is a small play area for younger kids, and older kids will be happy with the pool. There is a basic shop selling chocolate, snacks and milk and you can order bread. The bar/restaurant is by the lake and serves really good burgers as well as drinks and ice cream. The pitches are huge and there are two utilities blocks with a decent number of showers and loos. Ours backed onto fields full of sunflowers which was gorgeous!

Local attractions

Just like the rest of France, Charente’s no stranger to a château – and the handsome one at Gourville is just 10 minutes’ drive from this park. An even grander castle’s at La Rochefoucauld (35 minutes away), with a staircase said to be designed by Leonardo da Vinci. See more stately buildings at Jarnac (30 minutes), including a museum housed in a former wine storehouse and the Courvoisier centre dedicated to the history and production of Cognac, or head 45 minutes away from the park to the city of Cognac itself for yet another château and pretty public gardens. Into historical distilleries? Tours can be taken here at the grand riverside complexes of Hennessy and Remy Martin. If you’re thinking of scheduling in swimming and boating off the lakeside beaches of Saint-Yrieix lake (15 minutes’ drive), it might be best to do these before a tasting – especially if you’re planning on cycling here on a bike hired and delivered to the park…
