General
- On the west coast of Oléron
- Between the sea and the forest, sheltered by dunes
- Large pools, restaurant, Jacuzzi and spa
Oléron – c'est très fab. The Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes island is filled with beaches, surfing, fishing opps and seafood spots: if you've never been, aller here forthwith (and if poss, plan a lengthy stay to take in all that fabness).
Camping Les Gros Joncs is in a super spot in Les Sables Vignier, on the west coast of the isle, with sand dunes on one side and forest on the other. It's a landscaped site where guests can settle down for a spot of French relaxing, nature spotting, surfing, sports and cycling. A peaceful path leads directly down to the beach – the nearest section being a rocky corner that's fab for fishing; sunbathers and swimmers will need to stroll just a little further along for a stretch of sand.
Swims a little closer to home can be had at the site's spacious pools – set up camp at the outdoor pool for family-friendly fun features including a waterslide, paddling pool, Jacuzzi and pool bar, or retreat indoors for relaxing times at the hydrotherapy pool and spa. For extra chill-out points, deposit the kids in the capable hands of site mascot Mumphrey who'll entertain them with treasure hunts, crafts and other fun antics throughout the summer.
Time for coffee, a cocktail, perhaps a pizza? Head over to the bar-restaurant to have drinks and eats sorted for you; there's also a well-stocked mini market here for breakfast bits and ingredients to whip up your own feast.

Local attractions
Pedal one of the many cycle routes departing straight from the site or have a wander to the village of Domino about a kilometre and a half from Camping Les Gros Joncs, known for its July and August summer market.
Chassiron Lighthouse, its museum and garden are five kilometres away – it's well worth puffing up the 224 steps of the lighthouse for the views over Oléron's east coast and Fort Boyard and the Île de Ré beyond. Six kilometres away are the shops, markets, restaurants and fishing harbour of La Cotinière.
A little further away but still within easy reach for day trips are the open-air oyster museum Cité de l'Huître, the huge aquarium at La Rochelle, and the big cats and apes of La Palmyre Zoo in Royan.
