  • Beachfront site five minutes' bike ride from Sainte-Marie-de-Ré
  • A short cycle from more beaches for surfing, swimming and rockpooling
  • Summer programme of family-friendly activities and outings
Folks who dream of seaside living, take a peek at this place. Huttopia Camping Côte Sauvage is right on the shoreline at Basse Benaie beach – a mere hop, skip and jump from days spent frolicking in the sea or gadding about on the sands. Sounds like the kind of place you could settle for a while? Best make it as lengthy a while as you can, for there’s much to see and do around the gorgeous Île de Ré. Bring a bike or hire one on site and pedal off to take in the island’s many beaches, pick up foodie treats at local markets (oysters are particularly fine around here) and see traditional customs in the villages. (Never seen a donkey in pyjamas before? You may well do in Saint-Martin-de-Ré.) You’d best also be planning for a bit of time on site, too – there are games of pétanque, table tennis and table football to play, and a playground for les enfants to let loose. In summer, there are kids' activities in the mornings, with family-friendly games and outings following in the afternoon. And the fun often continues into the evening with live music, themed dinners and the like. If you fancy popping out for eats, it’s just a few minutes by bike to get to the restaurants (and supermarket) in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, or you can take it super-easy by wandering to the site’s restaurant for a meal or a drink out on the terrace. There’s also a snack bar for those all-important ice creams, and a delivery service hotfooting it down from the village bakery with your fresh bread and pastries of a morning.

Local attractions

Beaches… so many beaches, all different and all fab in their own way. Close by, head to Montamer or La Salée for serious swimming at high tide, Grenettes for surfing (with lessons if you’re baffled by the technique) or Notre-Dame armed with a net for rockpooling. Two wheels is the local way here – get on your bike for visits to the ruined Les Châteliers abbey or the fortified Saint-Martin-de-Ré, or for a rural ride through the salt marshes. Other fresh-air frolics around the island include horse riding, golf and watersports. All are within a half-hour ride on pleasingly flat and quiet roads.
