Seven hectares, with a sizeable wooded area and three fishing lakes packed with trout and carp – sound like enough space for your Charente-Maritime break? Then stake a claim to a corner of Camping Les Étangs Mina, a family site five minutes’ drive from Saint-Sornin. The surrounds, known as the Brouage Marshes, are something of a wildlife haven: otters, turtles and dragonflies are among the critters you might spot as you wander or cycle nearby, as well as more than 150 species of bird. Days by the coast aren’t far flung either, as it's less than half an hour's drive to Royan for beaches and boat trips, or the island of Oléron for bike rides (and more beaches). Back at base, much effort has made sure there’s plenty for all ages to do: facilities include an open-air pool, an outdoor fitness area, a pétanque court and a playground with bouncy castle. Come along in summer and the site buzzes with extra activities: sports tournaments, aqua gym classes and guided hikes for grownups, and treasure hunts, crafts and sports for small sorts. Of an evening, guests gather every night in high season for entertainment such as live music, quizzes and themed meals. For eats, the snack bar is open daily in high season for pizzas, burgers, ice creams and the like, all washed down by a wide range of beers, wines and other drinks. DIY types are welcome to light up a barbecue; supplies can be sourced at the site’s small shop or at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

If you’ve enjoyed cycling around the Brouage Marshes, follow up by bunging the bikes in the car and heading over to Oléron island (half an hour’s drive), where around 150 kilometres of quiet cycle paths wend their way through forests and marshes and link up the beaches. For an alternative way to see the sights, board the P’tit Train in Saint-Trojan for a 12-kilometre scenic trip. Fancy upping the speed level a bit? Roll up for some off-road action at the Buggy Leisure buggy driving park or clamber up to the tops of the trees at Indian Forest for high ropes courses and zipline zooming, plus water jumps, paintballing and a collection of crazy games to play. Both parks are half an hour away by car. Get some animal antics on the agenda with visits to Planet Exotica animal park (20 minutes’ drive) or La Palmyre Zoo (half an hour), or see sea beasties at La Rochelle’s excellent aquarium (45 minutes) – it’s one of the country’s largest, containing more than three million litres of seawater.
