A seaside escape, you say? Then set sail for Camping Les Charmilles, a dog-friendly site four kilometres from the seaside resort of Fouras. With over four kilometres of golden-sand beaches, three ports and the Atlantic sea within a short drive of the site, guests will be in an area that’s very advantageous for activities like hiking, cycling, horse riding, swimming, watersports, fishing, golfing and tennis.
On top of all that, you'll have access to a generous helping of leisure facilities and activities on site too. There are three outdoor swimming pools open from mid June to September and a heated indoor pool open all year round, with a paddling pool, waterslides and a conservatory. If you feel like games or the kids need to let off more steam, the site also has a sports court, pétanque court, bouncy castle and playground.
Come July and August, the team at Camping Les Charmilles puts on plenty of tournaments, concerts, shows and activities, along with kids’ club activities for mini family members aged between five and 12. When it comes to eating well and taking care of the practical stuff, there’s also a communal barbecue area, a laundry room and wifi. Those who want to take on the seaside on two wheels can make use of bike hire too.
This place is full of perks… it’s a 15-minute drive from two maritime destinations. Rochefort (15 minutes’ drive) has a maritime museum and a 17th-century dockyard with a rope factory. On the coast, La Rochelle (25 minutes) has an old harbour and modern-day marina. Stroll through 17th-century passageways in the old town, rummage around the shops or get your paws on some fresh seafood in the restaurants.
There are cafés, restaurants and shops within 20 minutes’ walk of the site but the biggest concentration is in Fouras itself.

Local attractions
As part of a migration route, the Marais d'Yves natural reserve (five minutes’ drive) is an excellent spot to go looking for rare bird species or peaceful strolls. Nearby Île de Ré (50 minutes) also has a reputation for wildlife – see what you can see from bicycle paths all around the island's salt marshes, beaches, dunes and pine forests.
It's hard to believe that Chateau de la Roche Courbon (half an hour) has been around since the 15th century. Once a castle and then an elegant chateau, it is still extremely grand and surrounded by an ancient forest too.
Stopping for hikes on the Passe aux Bœufs (35 minutes) on the way, head to the Fort de l'Ile Madame (40 minutes), a coastal castle where history aficionados can carry on their self-guided heritage tour.
