General

  • Friendly and peaceful family site a 15-minute drive from Cognac
  • Sample cognac and champagne and the owners' homemade aperitif
  • Playground, spotless amenities and pool with sun loungers alongside

'Fantastic', 'lovely' and 'very friendly' are just a teeny selection of accolades heaped on the spectacular little site of Camping du Pas des Biches – and there's cognac and champagne as well as homemade aperitif to sample here too.

The owners here make their own pineau ('delicious' and 'amazing' are the verdicts on this, and oui, you can buy bottles too to take gleefully home): sample it on a splendid and peaceful countryside setting surrounded by Cognac vineyards, with loads of green space and tall trees all around for shade. It's all on the edge of the handsome little village of Celles in the Charente-Maritime department, within easy reach of family days out at local villages and at Cognac and Pons 15 minutes' drive away – although perhaps don't let the kids sample the wares at the former...

Facilities are excellent here for days on site: there's an outdoor pool for family dips, sun loungers alongside for idle baksing, and a well-equipped playground to entertain the kids. Amenities including showers and toilets are kept spotless.

Please note that there's little English spoken at the site – however, you'll still find this place mighty friendly even if you don't parlez any français.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site only allows dogs up to 10kg.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/04 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Very relaxed rural campsite in gently rolling countryside. Very friendly owners who offer tastings of their own home made aperitif (for sale by the bottle). Plenty of space, average toilet and washing facilities and a small but well kept pool.

Remote, rural, rustic even, but I have never been to a campsite where the owners made us feel so welcome and could not have been more helpful. No English spoken by the owners, no French spoken by us, but somehow we managed to converse and had a wonderful time. Three nights in a tent, 15 minutes from Cognac, 15 minutes from Pons, 30 minutes from Saintes. Not everyone's cup of tea, first day we were a little unsure but once we settled in to our surroundings we loved it. No hesitation we will be back.

This is a fantastic site. We arrived late (9pm) and Ricard the owner was there to greet us with a smile. His English is almost non-existent but with my little French we understood each other.

We could choose the location to pitch. It is a reasonably sized site with mixed static caravans and people with their own tents/campervans/mobilehomes/caravans. There are pitches under the vast fir trees and most under smaller trees or in the open.

We arrived just after the french families had left for school, so there was only about 7 groups there. I cannot imagine it being an issue if it was full though, as the site is well laid out and has a very relaxed atmosphere.

The amenities are well resourced for the size of the site. The only exception might be the fridge/freezer facility, which I imagine could be an issue if lots of families need to use it.

The pool is a few metres along the road (I suspect it's Ricard's garden) which is beautifully sited and after the initial shock of being cooler than the 34 degree outside temperature, it is refreshing. The busiest time in the pool was around 5pm - the usual pre-dinner swim.

We are definitely returning next year

All in all, if you want a relaxed, calm, quiet site you cannot do any better than this!

Friendly owners and other guests. Lots of people who visit year after year. The toilets and showers were cleaned thoroughly. Fresh bead can be ordered each evening for the next day and pizzas are delivered if ordered once a week. There were several different nationalities visiting. Pets were allowed and well behaved. The pool was clean and had enough sun loungers, plenty for the size of the camp site. We had a really relaxing family holiday. We went to the beach a few times (about an hour away), Pons is a delightful medieval town, Cognac and Angouleme. There is a near by ostrich farm, a fois gras farm (we didn't visit here but other campers had and recommended it) and various other activities in the local area including flea markets. A climb up the church tower at Lonzac is well worth it, the church key can be borrowed from the local tebac. The camp site owners also produce their own Pineau, delicious!

A lovely, small campsite with basic but adequate facilities 15/08/2017

We stayed here in July 2016 and it was only when I was booking a campsite for this year that I remembered to do a review. Sorry! We loved this campsite. It was peaceful but not too quiet. Our pitch was level and shaded but with some sunshine. The owner was charming, helpful and friendly. He loved to show off his Pinot which he made on site and invited us to a degustation which was great as we met lots of the other campers and got to know some people and got some ideas of what to visit in the area.
The swimming pool was never crowded; much of the time our girls had it to themselves.
Extremely good value for money. Yes there was only one toilet plus a disabled toilet, but strangely enough, this was never a problem. We never had to wait. I think the facilities our adequate for the size of the campsite.
We could order fresh bread and croissants for the morning.

Local attractions

The site is 12 kilometres from the city centre of Cognac and its museums, Château Royal de Cognac and peaceful promenades around the Jardin Public and La Maison de la Lieutenance. Supermarkets, shopping areas, a golf course, parks, bars and restaurants are all to hand in town too.

Heading west from the site, it's also about 15 minutes' drive to the medieval town of Pons, a stopoff point on the famed St James's Way. The town's a splendid spot for sightseeing among medieval streets and aged buildings: start off at the central square and climb to the top of the donjon for a stroll around the gardens and viewsome scenes of the town and its Grand Escalier staircase.

For a restful and grownup time, the hot springs and casinos of Jonzac are within 25 minutes' drive. Camping du Pas des Biches is also well placed for seaside days at Meschers-sur-Gironde, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and Royan, all within an hour.
