Camping La Giroflée: Lots of shade

General

  • Family-friendly site five minutes' drive from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus
  • Opposite a sandy beach and next to a sailing/watersports school
  • Bread deliveries and fresh fruit and veg sales on site in summer

There are some folks who would (wisely) suggest that there are no finer days than those spent by the sea. Those folks are likely to be very pleased with their lot during a stay at Camping La Giroflée, a peaceful Poitou-Charentes coastal site five minutes’ drive from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus.

This is a super spot for seaside antics – there’s a sandy beach just across the road from the site and a sailing school next door where you can get stuck in to all sorts of watersports. Sea-view cycle rides are all around too, either on the Vélodysée bike path (which stretches for a muscle-busting 1200 kilometres along the country’s Atlantic coastline) or over on the island of Oléron, which faces the site and can be reached with around 20 minutes of pedalling. Those whose packing situation didn’t allow them to bring bikes can hire them on site.

For eats, it’s a five-minute drive (or 10-minute bike outing) to the shops in Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, although you can order bread deliveries on site in the summer months, and local farmers drop by with fresh fruit and veg a few times a week. There’s a restaurant next door and barbecues are permitted on site, but if you’re after a special dinner à deux, it’s perhaps worth seeking out nearby oyster sellers and trotting back to the beach for supper as the sun sets.

Should you briefly tire of the beach (pffft), there’s a playground and pétanque court on site for a bit of alternative entertainment.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Reception is unmanned after 6:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

  • Liked:

Relaxed site and very well run.
Warm welcome on arrival and able to select pitch.
Toilets/showers all clean and working well.
Very hot during our stay and trees scattered about the site added some very welcome shade.
20 minutes walk to Marennes la Plage with several restaurants plus seafood restaurant at the end and lagoon beach for safe bathing.
Good WiFi - all you need for a relaxing holiday :)

    Disliked:

Not connected to Camping La Giroflée but at restaurant next door customers would park around the entrance, especially in the evenings, which made entrance/exit to the site sometimes difficult (probably didn't help that they were very rude to us on the first evening)

Large pitches with a mix of shade and sun. They let you choose your pitch. Simple quiet and calm site. Amazing bike paths, perfect for exploring. Easy access to electric hook-up (we didn’t need to use).

    Disliked:

The site is further out of town than expected. Needs to be made clear that bike rental is only available in July and August. Lots of pitches are pre-reserved. Arrive at 3pm so you get a choice.

The pitches are lovely and level with plenty of space.
The site is quiet and the young lady on reception is a great host
WE WOULD DEFINITELY LOVE TO STAY HERE AGAIN - THANK YOU

    Disliked:

As with quite a few sites there is no toilet paper or toilet seats which if you forget to take your paper you are in trouble as it is just instinct to expect it. Also I think that after two years of covid there should be soap to hand-wash. Once again if you forget to take your own it is not too hygienic.
also the showers at the top of the site had only just luke warm water and it is a good walk to the other showers.

Local attractions

If life on the ocean wave appeals, make tracks to the sailing school a couple of minutes’ stroll away to learn the ropes for yourself, or devolve captaining responsibilities to the pros by boarding a boat trip from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, five minutes’ drive away.

More sea-themed days out might include meandering around the oyster farms in Marennes Plage (five minutes’ drive), a trip to the maritime museum in Rochefort (half an hour) and eyeballing underwater beasties at La Rochelle’s famed aquarium (50 minutes).

Sticking firmly to dry land for a while, swing by the splendid citadel of Brouage (15 minutes), where the fortified city walls guard all sorts of well-preserved 17th-century structures including a prison and an underground port. The Zoo de la Palmyre (half an hour) makes a fab day out for the small sorts, and there are lots of excellent walking and bike trails taking in beaches, forest and salt marshes on the island of Oléron (20 minutes’ bike ride over the bridge).
