General

  • Well placed for discovering the Bay of the Somme
  • Four kilometres from the beach
  • Family atmosphere, pools, paddling pool and restaurant

It is not, we think, une exaggeration to state that the Bay of the Somme is one of the most beauteous anywhere. For it's a member of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World as it's among the top on the planet – and if that wasn't enough for our geeky little hearts, the bay one of the best places in the entire country for birdwatching too. If you haven't been before, aller; if you have, aller encore.

And you'll need somewhere to stay, with easy bay access. Find it at Picardy's Camping Les Vertes Feuilles, four kilometres from the coast and its long sandy beaches at the town of Quend-Plage-Les-Pins.

It's a family-friendly campsite that's in a tiptop spot to use as a Somme base or to stick around on site: the aquapark with indoor and outdoor pools as well as a paddling pool should be a good start in keeping all sizes out of mischief – after a day of either, we'd suggest an evening in the site restaurant fully investigating just why the local Bouchot mussels are so highly prized.

Les Vertes Feuilles also has a grocery shop, games room, launderette, a washing-up area and toilet and shower blocks. Takeaway is available from the restaurant too if you feel you'd like to investigate the local cuisine at your leisure.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The indoor swimming pool is open between 01/04 and 01/11.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

camping agréable, emplacement grand et bien délimité

    Disliked:

Friendly lady at reception who spoke English.
4km cycle to the beach, mostly cycle paths and nice and flat. Beach is enormous with soft sand.

There is a playground and fitness park which our daughter liked.

    Disliked:

Awful music and karaoke until midnight nearly drove us mad. There is a pool but it was full so everyone was just standing still because there was no room to swim or play.

Lovely campsite and pitches. A nice mix of of couples, families and summer residents. The campsite is well-placed for a visit to the beaches at Quend and Fort-Mahon and an easy scenic drive from Calais if you do not want to travel too far after the Ferry crossing. Lots of places to visit near by like Les Cotroy and Amiens is a lovely city about an hour away. The facilities were clean and well maintained throughout the day and the campsite had a lovely feel not too noisy but not too quiet either. I would highly recommend for a long weekend camping here. The staff were very friendly and welcoming to us you can even order croissant's to collect in the morning.

Clean showers and toilets. Friendly staff and good atmosphere in bar. Food not bad either. Good burgers and pizzas. Location good for visiting Somme areas of historial interest. St Valery about 20 minutes away. Etaples 30 mins. Have to drive to beach but beaches at Fort Mahon and Quend la plage dog friendly (walk outside blue flags).

    Disliked:

Would have liked to have dog-walking areas in walking distance. Have to drive to beaches, etc.
Reception could e open a little earlier and longer hours.

Local attractions

Whether you want to strike out on foot, by pedal, by horseback, by kayak or poshly in a yacht, Camping Les Vertes Feuilles is sorted as a base from which to get around the Somme, and from there Picardy and northern France.

The Bay of the Somme covers 14 kilometres of spectacular French coastline and varied landscapes, and is a top French birdwatching spot, on one of the main routes for migratory birds over its water, marshes, dunes and saltwater meadows. Re humans, shripmers and kayakers are on the water during high tide, but stick around for low tide too to see much movement over the bay bed including locals digging for clams. (We think you should join in.)

If you're here to birdwatch and want a bit of guidance, pedal along the local cycle paths to get to the Marquenterre Ornithological Park, where among many other feathery species is the only white spoonbill colony in France. Guided tours are available and you'll also find marked trails, a shop and a bistro serving such Somme tasty stuff as grilled eel, cockles and mussels, all washed down with a flagon or two of good French cider.
