  • Spacious pitches next to a park on the outskirts of Amiens
  • 45 minutes' drive from the Bay of the Somme beaches
  • Next to a riverside cycle path; bike hire available on site
Preparing to pick from a peaceful parkland break and a cityside sojourn? Ditch the dilemmas and have the whole lot in one by staying at Camping Le Parc des Cygnes. Bag a berth among the trees here and you’ll be staying on a pleasingly spacious site between a park and the Somme river. Pedal your bike over to that riverbank to hit central Amiens with a leisurely traffic-free ride of 20 minutes or so for days out filled with boat trips, cathedral wanders and zoo walks. No space to transport your bikes? No probs – it’s easy to hire on site. Pitching up by a park has added benefits – as well as the site’s own facilities (a playground, table tennis, miniature golf and a TV room), you can trot next door for heaps of green space to run about in and extra bits and bobs including a fishing lake and a skate park. There’s also a little water play area for the kids to cool off in summer. Life’s essentials are easily sorted here, for the site has its own snack bar, grocery shop, launderette and tourist info corner, and there’s a sizeable supermarket a few minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Allocate a few days to Amiens, for there’s much to see, including a museum dedicated to local lad Jules Verne and a stunner of a cathedral that’s very much in the mould of the famed Notre-Dâme in Paris. It’s also worth spending a bit of time pottering through the cobbled streets of the Saint-Leu area and boarding a boat trip to gawp at the Hortillonnages floating gardens. Away from the centre, you may like to take a 10-minute drive to hire canoes for river paddling, spend the day at the city’s zoo or give the kids a taste of the past at the Samara archaeology park and living museum. Should you feel the need to swap city life for sea air, it’s around a 45-minute drive to the Bay of the Somme. Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy are the places for boat trips, nature walks and heritage train rides; aim a little further north for the sweeping sandy beaches of Fort-Mahon-Plage and Le Touquet.
