  • Family-friendly site with cowboy theme, 20 minutes' drive from Laon
  • On-site fishing and easy access to many hiking trails
  • Pool, masseuse, restaurant, go-kart hire and play area
Cowboys, carp and chilled-out massage sessions: what a winning combination... All can be had at Picardy's Camping Les Étangs du Moulin, an Aisne countryside site in a seven-hectare forest with cowboy-themed holidays, carp fishing and modern facilities decorated with a Western style. Adults will be likely be gunning for a session from the masseuse available to book on site, while juniors will approve mightily of the cowboy food in the restaurant, served up along with lighter bites; and the go-kart hire so kids can go careering around the site. There's also a heated indoor pool open throughout the season, pétanque and volleyball courts, and a play area not far from the pitching field: oui, this is a family-friendly site… And if you want to sing yourself around the surrounding countryside? Canter along to the splendid hikes and mountain bike routes of nearby Saint-Gobain Forest.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Pitchup always asks for a review, most campsites are in the norm, forgetful, normally a bit of tired looking grass and generally surrounded by hedges (in France) so not much to say about them but this one was truly a standout memorable campsite. I’m not big on themes, but this campsite has done it extremely well. This campsite is very pretty and had 5 fishing lakes and buildings that really did look like they came out of a western film, very well done not tacky. The young guy on reception at the campsite was very considerate of the fact that my partner is on crutches as our original pitch was up a slope, then on the level. He put us on a lovely level site near the lakes and the toilets and showers which gave us access to everything. We didn’t eat in the restaurant but would definitely try it next time as it looked very welcoming. The swimming pool that was heated was a definite bonus, it’s housed inside and lovely and warm. The toilets and showers were modern and mixed, not my favourite but that seems the norm in France. There were I think about 4 showers, 2 of them with showers and sinks in one, which is my preferred option. I like to brush my teeth in private, LOL! Everything was very clean. The showers were incredibly powerful, in fact so powerful I didn’t put my face too near it. The grey water emptying is just outside the campsite at the entrance as they didn’t seem to understand what I meant when I asked. We would definitely return, it was only a 1 night stay on the way back to the UK but really put a smile on our faces.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Fantastic site with a cowboy theme which was unique and really good. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the facilities are great with showers and the best pressure ever it exfoliates as well as cleans 😆. The large pitches are flat and the pool looked amazing just wish we were there longer to use it. Now we have a good excuse to return very soon.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked The staff are very good
We had a nice standing meal on the site restaurant would only recommend to anybody staying to use the restaurant
The local shops are roughly 5 to 10 minutes up the road
Would definitely visit there again
Great stop oversight if you are going onward to other countries

Disliked Could do with a shower block closer to our end of the site
But I’ve been informed by owners they are building one in the close season

Local attractions

After a few days around the forest or swimming/chilling on site, get along to other highlights of the region, like the medieval town of Laon about 12 kilometres away, where top picks include its its 12th-century cathedral and a wander down its alleys to the Old Bishop's Palace, Hôtel-Dieu and to the citadel. Also within about 20 minutes' drive are the Chemin des Dames, the 30 kilometres of 'ladies paths' that became the site for the three Aisne battles in World War I. Several French, British and German war memorials and cemeteries now lie along its route; guided tours are available from the visitor centre at the paths' Dragon's Lair network of caves. Another famed attraction in the area is the Château de Coucy (10 kilometres), the huge feudal fortress overlooking the valley of the River Ailette that's been standing since the thirteenth century and been a designated monument historique since the nineteenth.
