  • Welcoming family holiday park 800 metres from the coast
  • Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts 15 minutes' drive
  • Heated pool, playground, bar, bike rental and laundry facilities
Venture into the Vendée with a stay at Camping Le Chenal, a welcoming family holiday park just 800 metres from the sea. Inland explores are also on the cards in this top location, as the site is located on the edge of the Pays-de-Monts national forest, a wooded area full of pines that's crisscrossed by trails for walking and cycling (handily for the latter, bikes can be rented on site) Before you get out exploring the local area, though, you'll want to stick around on site to make use of this spot's superb amenities. In terms of leisure, the heated swimming pool with retractable roof is the key attraction, while other offerings like a pétanque court and evening entertainment will keep guests young and old busy throughout your stay. On top of that, there's a kids' playground and TV room, so you won't find yourself without options. Camping Le Chenal also has many practical facilities that are very handy to have, including a bar for snacks and drinks and a laundry room to keep your kit clean and tidy. You can walk to the nearest local food shop within a quarter of an hour to stock up on food and drink, and both Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts can be driven to in about 15 minutes for meals out by the seaside.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Toilets and showers were clean. Staff were friendly. Situated on the coast the beech is endless and there’s plenty of family orientated restaurants that looked typical of any resort catering for tourists.

Disliked: Motorhomes are an after thought for this site. No easy access to fresh water as had to use hose from swimming pool. Water tap on circuit road did not work. NO GREY WASTE DISPOSAL. Chemical waste had to go down a ‘stand and squat’ cubical. Very few spaces for MH and over hanging trees needed attention to avoid damage to van. Advise people to take an awning mat as the sand and twig pitch will enter your van continually, especially if you have a dog! No toilet seats, paper or soap in washrooms. Use of washing machines needed tokens at €5 a go. As this site is focussed on chalets there are no washing facilities for cooking and eating material. So, if you’re in a MH, you have to wash on the van creating grey waste…but again no grey waste disposal. There is a plenty for kids to do and a club with a bar. A fellow MH owner said he went once and was charged €8 for a beer. We didn’t try it, so only heresay.

Maori 2 bedroom safari tent (sheltered balcony)

Cordialement.

Local attractions

Rent bikes on site and pedal through the surrounding forest, or limber up and set out for longer stretches along EuroVelo 1/La Vélodyssée, a route that stretches for over 1,000 kilometres along France's Atlantic coast. After (or instead of…) all that exercise, pick one of the local area's stunning beaches and settle down for paddling, swimming or snoozing – you have a whole array of wide stretches of sand within a few minutes' drive. After touring the mainland's coast, head offshore to visit the spectacular Île d'Yeu island, which can be reached from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie from April to September (15 minutes' drive, then an hour's ferry crossing). If you haven't the sea legs to handle the ferry journey but don't want to miss out on the action, drive over the bridge to the equally pretty Île de Noirmoutier instead (30 minutes). The 'Coast of Light' area also has plenty of attractions designed with kids in mind, with popular options including Atlantic Toboggan (five minutes), a huge waterpark that can be walked to from the site. For treetop adventures, laser tag and archery, meanwhile, try Explora Parc (15 minutes), a top-rated activity centre down the road.
