General

  • National forest setting with direct access to a beach 200 metres away
  • Playgrounds, pool, paddling pool and bike paths
  • Family atmosphere with entertainment in high season

Exclusively for site guests… that's the flavour of both the peaceful and private path from Camping de la Plage de Riez and the splendid sandy beach it reaches 200 metres away, on the Vendée coast's spectacular Côte de Lumière near the popular and pretty seaside resort of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez.

Have a hol here for easy access to Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and other seaside towns like Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts, hundreds of kilometres of golden Atlantic coast beaches carved out along this part of France, and famed French destinations like Les Sables d'Olonne and Nantes within about an hour.

Camping de la Plage de Riez is a family-friendly and well-equipped site, set in a forest. It has good family facilities of an outdoor pool heated for most of the season, a multisports field, playgrounds and a TV room. A snack bar, takeaway and food shop are open in July and August.

Bike paths surround the site and bike hire is available. The small seaside resort of Sion-sur-Ocean is about 15 minutes' walk away along the beach: that's a mighty pretty and peaceful walk too...

Well defined pitches, many in dappled shade which was good on hot days. Easy access to the beach. Shop had most basic essentials.

    Disliked:

Closure of some toilet / washing facilities at end of August could be inconvenient if one was pitched some distance from the main block.

Great location right on the beach with national forest behind. Very convenient for cycling and plenty of things to do in the local area. The campsite has a great pool, a couple of parks and activities most days. There is a well equipped shop and restaurant/take away, we ate there once and the food was a good standard. There are plenty of showers and toilets and we never had to wait for a cubicle. Generally the site is kept clean and tidy. Our pitch had electric and water which was very convenient.
The large pitches are 10m x 10m which seems large, but you have to take into account your car, and our tent is 8m long so this left very little room for anything else. I would recommend the site but just take into account the dislikes below!

    Disliked:

The pitches are mainly sand which can prove a problem when pitching a tent. The slightest breeze pulls the pegs right out! The pitches are not particularly level and there is the odd tree stump to contend with. The pitches are very close together so not much room to spread out. For these reasons there are a lot of caravans with awnings and less tents than you would normally see.
The toilet facilities are basic so no loo roll or soap provided. Generally these were kept clean by the guests, but a once a day clean was done by staff except Sunday it would appear. On one occasion the ladies was in a very poor state and reception was shut so nothing was done about it.
The loud music/entertainment can go on quite late and there is no escape!
The beaches are nice but the closest beach has a lot of seaweed so not the nicest to swim in. You have to wade through knee high seaweed at most states of tide. Not the campsites fault though!
There are nicer beaches further south in St. Gilles Croix de vie.

The proximity to the beach and the small seaside town of Sion de l'Ocean. Plenty of walk and bike riding nearby.
    Pleasant pitches but see below.
Sanitary facilities were basic but clean. Plenty available for the size of the site.
The pool was clean but not heated as stated on the website.
On site shop handy for breakfast croissants and bread.
Takeaway had delicious, freshly cooked pizzas
Despite the problems outlined below, this is a relaxed and pleasant site which I would visit again - stipulating a larger pitch and easier access.

    Disliked:

This site is set among pine trees, unless you are on one of the larger pitches near the beach. Many pitches have the trees growing within the pitch and this may make putting up tents a problem. This was the case for one of our party. They were able to get up the large tent but the position of the tree meant the use of space to park and eat outside was compromised.
The lanes/roads between pitches are narrow and turning with a caravan into/out of them was impossible in some instances. Took us 3 attempts to get to our pitch - not helped by the 'no left turn' sign facing the wrong way at the entrance.A little calm and careful reversing got us out of that pickle. We had a 24 foot tourer caravan which we would have struggled to site without a motor mover. One inconsiderately parked car could mean difficulty getting out and round some of the corners.
