If you fancy surfing, galloping, cycling or just sightseeing your way down France’s Atlantic coast, then make tracks for this very fine spot in the Vendée. Camping Les Sorinières is a welcoming, wooded site about five minutes’ drive from the town of Nieul-le-Dolent and 20 minutes from Atlantic coastal resorts like Longeville-sur-Mer and La Tranche-sur-Mer. It’s a comfortable base, with a swimming pool, a kids’ playground and a games area with billiards, table football and table tennis. On the practical side, the washrooms have plentiful hot showers, there’s a laundry to keep everyone looking their best and everyone has access to a fridge and freezer. Barbecues are welcome, so no excuse for not stocking up on delicious local produce at some of the many farmers’ markets in the area and grilling up an alfresco feast. Close by in Nieul-le-Dolent there’s a generous helping of bars, restaurants and supermarkets. As well as the obvious attractions of sand and sea, this stretch of the coast is crammed full of family-friendly amusement parks and leisure activities, from history-themed mystery trails at Le Château des Aventuriers (15 minutes) to the slides, inflatables, trampolines and pedal-karts at Parc des Dunes half an hour away to bombing down the massive waterslides and bobbing about in wave pools at Atlantic Toboggan (an hour), there’s something to keep everyone smiling.

Local attractions

Surfers flock to the France's Atlantic coast and whether you’re a pro or a novice wav=-rider, you’ll find numerous hire shops and tuition centres in seaside spots like Sables d’Olonne and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (half an hour and 50 minutes). There’s also a throng of equestrian centres, offering you the opportunity to gallop along the wide sandy beaches or trek through the inner wetlands, while the flat coastal roads and cooling sea breezes make it tempting turf for cyclists too. If you’re interested in exploring the landscape in more detail, Saint-Denis-du-Payré is home to an excellent wetlands centre, where you can take guided walks or make your own way along stilted trails to spot herons, teal and sponbills. For wildlife of a somewhat wilder kind, the fab oceanside zoo at Sables d’Olonne houses 40-odd endangered species including monkeys, penguins and lions, while the multi-coloured array of underwater life at Aquarium de Vendée near Talmont-Saint-Hilaire seems like it belongs to another planet altogether. Further afield, but easily doable for a day trip or two, the white sandy beaches, elegant fishing villages and forested bike trails of Île de Ré are around an hour and a half’s drive away.
