A 15-minute drive from Les Sables-d’Olonne, on the northern fringes of the Olonne Forest, Camping Le Bois de la Gachère is a dog-friendly site shaded by holm oaks and maritime pine trees. A pleasant 25-minute walk through the forest takes you to Plage des Granges, an expansive sandy beach that’s just the ticket for a spot of wild swimming or surfing. Keen to have a go at riding waves, but don’t know where to start? Walk south along the beach to Plage de Sauveterre, a supervised beach (in summer) with a surf school. But there’s much more to Le Bois de la Gachère than its privileged location. This remarkably well-equipped site draws families with its many facilities, which include a kids’ club (with organised activities such as crafts, games and dances), a playground with a miniature adventure course, and a room with arcade games and table football. Then there’s an indoor/outdoor heated pool with a toddlers’ area and spray games. While the children tire themselves out sampling all of the above, the grown-ups might sneak off to the pool with massage jets, embrace the French lifestyle on the pétanque court, or sip a drink at the bar. Those who feel more energetic might hire a bike and explore the cycle paths that start directly from the site. Explore the nearby Olonne Marshes (where you might spy migrating birds such as avocets and egrets) and Olonne Forest; or pedal all the way to Les Sables-d’Olonne (40 minutes).

La Grande Plage in Les Sables-d’Olonne (15 minutes’ drive) is an expansive crescent of sand skirted by the Remblai promenade, which is dotted with cafés and ice-cream parlours. The Île Penotte district is an area of narrow alleys decorated with vibrant seashell mosaics, while the Armandèche Lighthouse is a popular spot for a sunset walk. The Vendée Aquarium in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire (25 minutes) is home to more than 500 marine species from all over the world. The kids might be excited to spot a real-life Nemo (a clown fish) alongside many other colourful tropical fishes, plus octopus and starfish. Inspired by Oriental gardens, Les Jardins du Loriot (half an hour) spreads around a central pond decorated with lotus flowers. Stroll among colourful camellias and dahlias, past scarlet Japanese torii gates, to admire Chinese-style pagodas, assorted statuary and a bamboo grove.
