  • Peaceful setting in the Marais Poitevin
  • A 35-minute drive from La Rochelle
  • Pool, playground, fishing and restaurant
Prepare your paddling arm: Camping l'Île Cariot is in the Marais Poitevin, the second biggest wetland in western France: here you can/certainly should take a canoe out, or a kayak, or perhaps just relinquish the paddle and allow yourself to drift dreamily down its waters on a guided flat-bottomed boat… Camping l'Île Cariot is a friendly and easy-going site, in a peaceful place about 20 kilometres from the beaches and watersports of the Atlantic coast, and 35 minutes' drive from the smashing port city of La Rochelle. Countryside and coast activities like fishing, hiking, riverside cycling and birdwatching are all around in the surrounding area. Among the many facilities on site are a heated pool with a shallow pool for kids (open from June to September), a food shop, a playground, a pétanque court, a TV room and a restaurant. Fishing is also available on site. The site also has shower and toilet blocks, disabled facilities and a launderette.

What customers say

This is a small, friendly campsite with a high standard of cleanliness in its facilities. Guests frequently praise the helpful and welcoming staff, and the pleasant atmosphere. The heated swimming pool is a popular feature, as are the play areas for children. Shady pitches and proximity to local amenities are also highlighted as positives. Some guests experienced weak Wi-Fi, and one noted a noisy evening due to a local celebration. Issues with mosquitoes and a muddy pitch after heavy rain were reported in August 2025.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Swimming pool was a lovely added bonus. The staff were very nice and helpful.

Disliked Showers closed at 10pm. Outside wash basins were available but didn't like having to ensure showered and washed before 10pm. Also, due to standing water in the vicinity, the mosquitoes were rife.

Liked Friendly staff

Disliked Quite a bit of road noise (including sirens).
Two large permanent tents by toilet blocks housing groups of men (not sure whether permanent or holidaying). Found it quite intimidating using toilet facilities. Showers are mixed too. Only one sink inside ladies toilets situated right next to the entrance. Lots of outside basins for washing - but again next to nearby tents

From the manager: Hello,
The "group of men" you mention are workers who harvest the melons. They are not malicious and did not disturb you. If they had—though I would be very surprised if that were the case—you should have come to see us. But that didn't happen. We are a small campsite with few pitches, so I don't see the point of having separate sanitary blocks for men and women; the mixed-use setup works very well.
Have a good day.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Good location. Not far from the main autoroute south to Bordeaux.
Lovely heated swimming pool.
Clean and well maintained toilet & shower block.
Small, compact site

Disliked If you don't have any food with you, there aren't many options regarding local shops or restaurants close by. Especially if you arrive on a Sunday when we did.

Liked Reception staff were very kind and helpful. The site is very nice, well laid out with a good swimming pool and small sanitaire including a super hot shower.
Huge play area with multiple activities for children.
Good chemical waste disposal point with a tap and hose for rinsing.
The main sanitaire was spotless clean and there was ample hot water throughout our stay.
Snack bar was very adequate providing some food and drinks, plus croissants and baguettes each day when ordered.

Disliked Inclement weather which was a freak of nature and no fault of the campsite.
We only had one sunny day and unfortunately for us the weather turned to heavy rain and storms for four days. Our pitch turned into a mud bath which was very unpleasant and this drew many biting insects. The mud was very stubborn to remove from shoes - clay like.
The site is remote and apart from a local supermarket (very good) and pharmacy, you have to drive 11kms to find another.
We were unable to explore anything locally on our bikes which was a great pity.

Local attractions

Whether your tastes are ticked by a peaceful stroll along country lanes, a whirl around lively La Rochelle, gently stalking local wildlife or basking on the beaches of the southern Vendée, Camping l'Île Cariot is well placed for weeks' worth of active and chilled out days. The famed old abbey buildings of Maillezais, Nieul sur l’Autise and Saint Michel en l’Herm are also within easy reach. Boats of all sorts should be investigated around here too, first up with a canal trip along the rivers of the Marais Poitevin, then with a lazy afternoon being rowed around the Venise Verte, the marshland crisscrossed with teeny canals. Or take the binoculars to the wetlands of La Baie de l’Aiguillon Natural Park, home and migratory stopoff to thousands of wading birds and waterfowl. Just along the coast, have city days out at Fontenay le Comte and La Rochelle.
