Private beach

  • Family-friendly and lakeside site with its own private beach
  • Next to a leisure lake with second beach and many free activities
  • Fishing, terrace bar, snack bar, shop and library
A beach, a beach, a lush sandy beach – and all the sole domain of site guests too (yes, at this point you're allowed to do a smug little dance). The sands are the private beach belonging to Camping du Lac des Varennes in the Loire valley, in the southern part of the Sarthe department and 10 minutes' stroll from the pretty wine-producing town of Marçon. And a reason for smug little dance numero deux? There's a second, public, beach at your disposal too, part of the leisure centre alongside the site where you can whizz down the waterslide or have hours of sailing, boating, archery, wall climbing, horse riding or whacking balls about the miniature golf and tennis areas. All leisure centre activities are free for site guests. Camping du Lac des Varennes is between the left bank of the lush Loire river and the 50-hectare Lac des Varennes, within easy reach of the huge forest of Bercé and its 300 kilometres of trails. Kids are especially well catered for here at the July and August club where they can join in with treasure hunts, take part in shows and games, or get messy with crafts, drawing and face painting. For all ages, a packed entertainment and activities programme runs all day long in summer. A terrace bar overlooking the lake and a snack bar near the beach both take care of eats in splendid surroundings, or you could fire up a barbecue pitchside for more of the same. The site also has a bread delivery service, a shop and – another happy dance – a library where you can borrow or swap books, comics and magazines.

What customers say

This well-maintained campsite boasts a beautiful lakeside location with spacious, level pitches, many offering direct lake access and views. Visitors praised the friendly and helpful staff, good on-site amenities including a bar/restaurant, and the variety of activities for children. While the natural surroundings and swimming lake were highlights, some noted that toilet and shower facilities are dated and could benefit from updates, and a few mentioned issues with noise and bin location. Overall, it's considered a great site, particularly for those enjoying watersports and exploring the local area.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked The lake and scenery is beautiful.
The food at the restaurant is good.
We stop here for one night on the way down to the south of France every year and we always say we should stay longer.
The man made beach is great.
It’s so beautiful in the morning 🌅
There was a bouncy castle for the kids and live music in the evening.

Disliked No toilet paper in the toilets and they are mixed. I don’t mind but my teenage step daughter felt uneasy about it.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked We arrived 19h30 after reception had closed at 19h00. Reception staff was friendly and helpful and could speak English. That is the only plus for this campsite. We took a wrong turn, got stuck in the mud, it was dark already ~ no campsite lighting, no-one around to show us to our campsite. The bathrooms is horrible, looks clean but stink of urine (so it is really not cleaned for a while), cob webs and spiders are taking over the bathroom ~ I brushed my teeth outside, it was safer!!! No toilet paper and no sign on the door...so I pressume it is a unisex bathroom. The shower stalls has no shelving for your staff so not sure how you will get dressed in it without a stanger of the opposite sex seeing you naked. WILD CAMPING would have been a better option. If you pay for facilities you expect to find clean comfortable showers and at least TOILET PAPER!!!! There appears to be no quiet time in the site, the neighbouring site came home after 23h00 and chatted loudly till almost 01h00. The site is a mud hole!!!!!!!! I will never return and never recommend this place!

Local attractions

This is lush land for hiking and biking, along the Loire riverbanks or among the hundreds of kilometres of trails in the vast forest of Bercé about 25 minutes away. Bercé is a famed and ancient place covering 5,400 hectares, with paths for walking, cycling, mountain biking and horse riding; plenty of picnic spots and – do go to say bonjour – mighty oak tree Boppe, which is around 700 years old. If it's vineyards and vino you seek, drive for about 50 minutes to the east to reach the AOC wine region of the Côteaux du Loir, where Chenin blanc and Pineau d'Aunis (or Chenin noir) grapes are grown for white, red and rosé wines. About an hour from the site, pick up a few bottles of red at Saumur, or wander along the Thouet river from Saumur to the wine cellars of Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent. Town days in Tours are 45 minutes' drive to the south.
