Hauling heaps of kit around? Just say non and snap up a spot at Le Moulin des Forges, a peaceful Pays de la Loire place on the banks of the Erve river five minutes’ drive from Sainte-Suzanne. Arrive here and you’ll see that pretty much all you need has been set up ready for you to settle in – bathrooms are on hand, beds are made up and the friendly folks on site have even got breakfasts sorted. Kitchen facilities are provided if you want to prep your own meals, and barbecues are welcome; supermarket supplies are 15 minutes’ drive away in Évron. If that’s too much hassle (or you really are travelling light), you can leave all the cooking to others by ordering picnic lunches or gathering with fellow guests for sociable table d’hôtes dinners. However you’ve chosen to eat, there’s plenty of space for digesting and siestas in the peaceful riverside gardens. Or you may prefer to take a post-prandial promenade around the grounds, greeting the resident ponies, goats and donkey as you go (they’re all most friendly, so feel free to swoop in for a little stroke). With all the essentials sorted, you’ll be left with more time to get out and about – perhaps hiring bikes, saddling up for a horse ride or heading out on foot to potter locally, strolling around Sainte-Suzanne or hitting the lake beach at Sillé Plage might appeal?

Local attractions

Start your local wanderings in Sainte-Suzanne, five minutes away by car – take a walk round the well-preserved medieval walls before climbing to the castle for some super views over town and countryside. If the nippers are flagging, their efforts can be rewarded with cool drinks and tasty pastries at the old town’s cafés and bakeries. (Sans enfants? Perhaps sample a little something from local brewery La Suzannaise.) Take a look even further back in time by booking a visit to the prehistoric Saulges caves, 20 minutes’ drive away. Having explored the underground caverns, take your dino-dippy kids next door to La Ferme aux Fossiles to see a collection of ancient critters. Being a couple of hours’ drive from the coast you may think you’ve blown your chances of a beach day. Think again – there’s a lovely sandy stretch with safe shallow lake waters for swimming at Sillé Plage, half an hour’s drive away. Miniature golf, pedaloes and fishing are among the activities on hand, and there’s an adventure park next door for treetop trails and other woodsy antics.
