  • Quiet farm site halfway between Laval and Fougères
  • Home to farm animals, exotic birds and peacocks
  • A five-minute drive from shops and supermarkets in Ernée
Picnic among the peacocks and carouse with the cows; this quiet and pretty farm site has a resident population of standard livestock and other, less familiar species. Camping La Cascade is a top place to stop off at or use as a base for sightseeing days: it's halfway between Laval and Brittany's Fougères, just under an hour from Rennes and an hour and a half from Saint-Malo. Pitches are mixed gravel and grass, on a spacious and flowery site home to farm animals and pets including a rooster, a pair of parakeets and a peacock. It's quiet at night too (apart from occasional crowing by the rooster or peacock). The farm has showers, toilets, charging facilities and chemical disposal. If you should want to head away from this welcoming spot for a while, the Mayenne department town of Ernée is a five-minute drive away with shops and supermarkets and super opps for walking by the river.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Excellent hostess who welcomed us warmly and was very helpful in offering us space for our large MH and trailer. The toilet/shower was clean, and water/electricity close by.

Disliked: Despite the name, the campsite is not anywhere near a waterfall, as I had hoped. However, as an overnight stay, it was ideal.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Warm shower and toilet available in gite for pitches. Not sure if this is available all year round as they were moving in portable toilets as we leaving. Hard-standing for the pitches.

Disliked: Electric was French hookup only. So unable to connect without an adaptor (we have a Swift). We didn't have one so were left unprepared so relied on 12V for the night we stopped over. remote location only stayed a night as using as a stop over but not sure we would have wanted to stay longer.

From the manager: Je trouve cela très dommage que vous n'êtes pas venu à l'accueil pour nous réclamer une prise car nous en avons et vous en mets à disposition. Il faut juste communiquer quand il y a des problèmes.

Local attractions

For indoor days, Ernée has a popular aquatic centre, where the kids can splash and slide, and adults can swim or steam in the sauna. There's also a motocross track offering muddy thrills for petrolheads. Cheese enthusiasts have a treat in store at Laval (35 minutes' drive), home of the Lactopôle cheese museum. Learn more than you ever thought possible about the history and the science behind France's famous diary products, craft your own Camembert in a workshop and – best of all – eat cheese. Laval has a splendid science museum as well, and a 12th-century château slap-bang in the town centre. It's a fine place to take a boat cruise down the Mayenne, most particularly a sunset one with dinner (and presumably cheese) included. In terms of culture and history and river views, Laval has a number of rivals in the region. Fougères (25 minutes), Mayenne (30 minutes), Jublains (40 minutes) and Evron (55 minutes) provide a tempting spread of Roman ruins, medieval castles and quirky museums, all in pleasant surrounds. Saulges (50 minutes) has an eighth-century church and something much older hidden away by the riverside. Fine walking trails take you through the mini-canyon and towards a network of caves that were occupied and decorated in prehistoric times.
