  • Peaceful, family-friendly site deep in the Loire Valley
  • A 20-minute drive from Saumur; Angers and Tours an hour away
  • Next to two fishing lakes and a supermarket
On the hunt for pastures new? With a top location and good basic amenities, Camping de la Grande Pâture has one and a half hectares of land where you can eat, drink and get up to all manner of Loire Valley larks. The owners, Cassandre and Frédéric, will be pleased to share their favourite local haunts, whether you fancy an afternoon at the local vineyard, are looking for tips on what to get up to in the gorgeous riverside town of Saumur (20 minutes' drive) or want the low-down on local Loire châteaux. Cassandre and Frédéric are also the proud proprietors of a snack bar that's open between April and October, so drinks and snacks are easily sorted too. As for the facilities, the site has loos, hot showers, cassette disposal and a washing-up area. There's also a toilet block for people with reduced mobility. This place feels remote and is superbly spacious, with a hectare and a half of well-kept green grounds to lounge about in. But it's also mere metres from off-site amenities like two fishing lakes, a small kids’ playground and a BMX track, plus a well-stocked supermarket that's around half a kilometre from base.

Liked: Unfortunately we didn’t get to stay here due to our ferry being cancelled due to storm conditions

Disliked: As requested by PitchUp, we emailed the site direct in an attempt to change our booking but unfortunately, despite also checking junk mail, it seems we didn’t receive a reply or acknowledgment

Liked: It is a really peaceful site. Large and lots of space as not very busy so very quiet on a morning etc. We looked out onto the fishing lakes and we walked around them often. This kids (age 7&10) really liked it. Super U incredibly close to handy and loads of good bike rides around, we went up to the local forest and made dens one day. Snack bar friendly and full of locals so must be good food although I didn’t eat in there. Got a good coffee in the morning and people that run it are really friendly. Washing machine and dryer available to use. We went to Saumur one day (20mins) and to a outside lake for swimming (20mins). Cycled around the area and Mouliherne 10 mins away has a great fishing lake for walks and playground where we caught crayfish.

Disliked: It is a peaceful campsite so not for those with kids that want activities. It is not an expensive site and that is reflected in the showers/toilet area. They are fine and hot strong showers but the area is a bit rough around the edges.

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We planned to stop over for one night near the beautiful town of Saumur on our trip back up to Calais. Initially we were a bit dubious on arrival as the site was fairly empty. However we shouldn’t have worried. Really friendly staff, good roads to and from Saumur for a “large” caravan and close to the M/way. Weather was dreadful otherwise there are nearby lakes to walk around and a lovely village. Facilities more than adequate, we would use again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Really lovely spot for a stopover. We were the first visitors of the season so had the entire field to ourselves! A lovely gentle stroll in the evening around the two fishing lakes, the smell of freshly cut grass and no sound but the birdsong that was still going at nearly midnight :) Practicalities: good access to electricity & all the functional needs for the motorhome, an excellent disabled shower/toilet, didn’t use the other toilet/shower block but everything was very clean. Petrol station & small supermarket a few minutes walk along the road. Also a health centre if needed! Quite close to the main road so guessing could get noisier on a work day - we were there Sunday night of a Bank Holiday weekend so didn’t get any traffic disturbance at all. And Michael, the English site owner, is lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful! He’s not on site though so best to book in advance & contact him via his mobile - don’t just turn up on the off chance (out of high season, at least.)

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Active types (as well as those partial to a little lakeside snoozing…) have a couple of options to try out: Lac de Hommes (20 minutes' drive), an ace inflatable water park and swim zone, and Rillé Wake Park (20 minutes), where you can try your hand at wakeboarding, kneeboarding, yoga and pilates. Once energised and ready for more, you could move on to Bourgueil (20 minutes), a historic town with an impressive Benedictine abbey and a weekly Tuesday market. There's also Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil (20 minutes), the village next door, where vineyard tours and sampling sessions beckon. If that appeals, perhaps consider adding the Combier distillery in Saumur (20 minutes) to your itinerary. There's also much to see and do slightly further afield. Unesco-listed Fontevraud's Royal Abbey (30 minutes) houses the remains of Richard the Lionheart, making it a must-see for history fans. Zoo de la Flèche (40 minutes), where you can get a look at over 160 species, is another crowd-pleaser. On top of all that, this site is roughly equidistant between Angers and Tours (both an hour), where castles, botanical gardens, boat trips and cathedrals are yours for the taking.
