General

  • Among manicured grounds of a 19th-century château
  • A 35-minute drive from the Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings
  • Two pools, outdoor gym and cosy bar and restaurant

Peaceful, green and spectacularly scenic... Camping Château du Gandspette is a quiet countryside site set among the grounds of a 19th-century château, across 11 hectares of bloom-filled wooded parkland in the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park. The Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings are 35 minutes' drive away.

This park’s pleasant woodland setting makes for a pristinely peaceful stay: the site has spacious and landscaped pitches surrounded by mature trees, loads of green space and lots of blooms and hedges. Leisurewise, there are two outdoor pools (one heated), ping pong tables and tennis courts, as well as a multisports area and an outdoor gym; activities run in high season too.

Food is well sorted at the site’s well-appointed bar and restaurant, serving grilled meats and regional specialities such as Flemish carbonnade and potjevleesch, and at the snack bar for pizza and fries to eat in or take away. The bar and its viewsome terrace is where you can sink a drink or two (while watching major sports fixtures, if that’s your leisurely bent).

And if the scenery isn’t enough to rouse you from your slumber? Freshly baked bread is on sale every summer morning.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/05 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Video games are available between 1 July and 30 August.

The bakery is open every day from 8am to 9am from mid-May to mid-September.

The bar is open between 1pm and 11pm during high season, and from 6pm to 9pm the rest of the year.

Really nice camp site. Felt very safe & had plenty to keep the children busy. It was clean tidy and not noisy. The staff where very helpful. They also had fresh bread, a guy came around with strawberrys, so felt very looked after. Best it was near the eurotunnel, so as a quick alternative to camping in the UK, was great and the facilities much better than most UK campsites. Also near Lille (1hr) which was a very nice town & had a zoo for 4 Euro, which again fun with kids. St Omar has a lovely park, so again lots to do. Why stay in the UK with this on your doorstep?

Very friendly staff, lovely grounds, nice woodland to walk the dog, very close to Calais so great for a stopover. Dog friendly bar and restaurant (see my dislike section re the food though). Walking distance to the Blockhaus, well worth a visit. Driving distance (5 mins) to local supermarket.

    Disliked:

Shower water temperatures were a bit hit & miss, sometimes tepid, sometimes hot. Our pitch was really muddy (there had been a lot of rain in the days before we arrived and we were at the bottom of a slope), not really their fault I suppose, but it meant we didn't put our awning up. The food in the restaurant was not great. Overall a bit dated, but ok for the price.

Local attractions

The region is well served by road, rail and sea connections, including services such as the Eurostar and several from major Channel maritime operators. The site is 45 minutes’ drive from the Calais-Fréthun high-speed rail international station too, making one-hour journeys to London, 30-minute journeys to Lille and two-hour journeys to Brussels and Paris a cinch.

The site’s Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park setting is tiptop for hikes and bike rides around the area, with the GR 128 hiking trail between Wissant in France to Gand in Belgium within easy reach. Horse riding, fishing and golf are available in Ruminghem and St Omer, and for kid-friendly days out, bowling, go-karting and theme parks such as Dennlys Parc at Dennebroeucq and Plopsaland de Panne in Belgium are all within an hour’s drive.

History buffs can take a trip to the Eperlecques Blockhouse, a kilometre from base, and the La Coupole bunker complex (aka the St Omer Dome) is less than 20 minutes’ drive away. Other war memorial sites and points of interest well worth a trip to include the Fortress of Mimoyecques, the 1939-1945 Museum at Ambleteuse, the Memorial Museum at Calais, the Atlantic Wall Museum in Audinghen and the Memorial Museum at Dunkirk.
