  • Quiet retreat between ponds and woods among 25 acres of vegetation
  • A 35-minute drive from Dunkirk and the Cote d'Opale beaches
  • Pétanque tournaments, fishing ponds and themed evenings on site
Hands up if you’d like to fill your holidays with fishing, swimming on the Cote d'Opale or hiking across great plains… yes? Then take a look at Camping Le Romantic, a quiet family-friendly site between ponds and woods in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais countryside. This is a place that has activities for all ages and several fishing ponds so that everyone can have a go (or compete in the site’s trout fishing contest if you’re something of an expert). There are more than 25 acres of vegetation around the site, so you’ll have plenty of greenery to rest and recharge in between activities. When your batteries are adequately topped up, make your way to the city of Dunkirk and the sandy beaches on the Cote d'Opale coast, a little over half an hour’s drive away from Camping Le Romantic. Staying busy is straightforward here, whether that involves playing in the site’s pétanque and belotte tournaments, taking hiking trips across the great plains or cycling in the hills around the Abbaye Sainte-Marie aux Monts-des-Cats (15 minutes’ drive). The site also runs Olympiads, as well as themed evenings such as a Claude Francois evening or a night at the disco. With dogs welcome and a cheery atmosphere all-around, Camping Le Romantic ticks a lot of boxes. It also has good access to the shops and restaurants in Steenvoorde, five minutes’ drive away.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Quiet, lovely site with friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Bar was lovely with a nice selection of food. Great stop over from Calais. Pitch was big. Sanitary block was clean.

Disliked: No toilet paper in toilets. Could do with marking water and bins on the map. Wasn't easy to find everything.

Nice site, but more for the cabin fraternity than the touring camper.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Really peaceful during the week, more noisy at weekends. Good access to town and supermarkets. Good size pitch

Disliked: Lack of information from site staff. Only told where showers and bins were, had to find water and chemical disposal facilities myself. No signs in English or any other language. The half built appearance of the site takes the shine off the name Le Romantic

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: It was set in a lovely location, easy accessible and the staff were friendly. Very good value and only 5 mins from beautiful Cassel

Disliked: Facilities were sub standard. There were 3 toilets, one was out of use, one was okay to use but the other had no toilet seat. Also have to provide your own toilet paper and soap to wash your hands. Camping area was easy to access although subjected to the worst of the wind in the campsite being next to very thin trees also.

Local attractions

The Côte d’Opale offers up plenty of places to go for a day out, whether you’re heading there for beach time or the historical side. Plage du Braek (35 minutes’ drive), Petit-Fort-Philippe (40 minutes) and Plage de Leffrinckoucke (40 minutes) are the places to go for sandy beaches and swims or paddling. There are sandy beaches in Dunkirk (35 minutes) too, and it’s a place where you can mix that up with some time exploring the historic ships in the port museum or learning about the past at the Dunkirk 1940 Museum. There’s more on that subject at Blockhaus d’Éperlecques (35 minutes), a World War II bunker and museum. It’s handy to have a couple of ideas ready for damp days too: at those times, the City of Lace and Fashion museum (50 minutes), in a former lace factory, and Nausicaá - Centre national de la Mer aquarium (an hour and 10 minutes) really come into their own.
