  • Quiet site with fishing pond, half an hour's drive from Dunkirk
  • Within half an hour's drive of the beach and an hour from Lille
  • A 40-minute drive to coastal nature reserve and Plopsaland theme park
Fancy somewhere quiet near the coast? With a fishing pond, nature walks and watersports and maybe a bit of history too? A three-minute drive from the village of Merckhegen in the Nord-Pas de Calais region of northern France, Camping Du Chemin de Cassel ticks all the boxes and then some. Half an hour’s drive from Dunkirk’s beaches, war museum and shops, this is a peaceful, tree-lined site surrounded by fields, with basic but well-tended facilities. It’s a compact place, making for easy ambles between quiet contemplation on the fishing pond and riotous family contests on the pétanque court. The comfy quarters take their name from the nearby town of Cassel, and it’s worth a 20-minute drive to see this tiny fortified settlement with its cobbled and crooked alleyways, hidden courtyards and elegant gardens. Climb Mont Cassel, the highest point in these parts, for views towards the sea and Belgium. There’s a small grocery store in Merckeghen (doubling up as a bar and tobacconist), supermarkets and weekly markets in Dunkirk: forage for French fare in town and have a barbecue back at the base. The amenities are equipped for wheelchair access and for family use, and there’s a laundry on-site to keep everyone looking smart.

What customers say

This peaceful countryside campsite is praised for its friendly and helpful owners, quiet atmosphere, and convenient location for ferry crossings to Dunkirk and Calais. Pitches are generally large and private, with well-maintained and clean facilities, though some reviews mention they are basic and may require payment for showers. Visitors highlight the good value for money and the relaxing environment, making it ideal for short stays or stopovers. A small number of guests noted minor issues with pitch levelling, electricity, and a lack of on-site amenities.

Liked Very quiet and small site. Hosts snd others on site were very welcoming snd friendly. Perfect location for a stop over for Dunkirk ferry. We only stayed 1 night but had to leave 4am for the 6am ferry.
Had WiFi and children’s play area.

Disliked I think it’s around 25 minutes walking distance to any shops or restaurants, so ideally bring food with you to cook as there’s nothing on site.
Only 2 toilets and need to bring toilet paper with you, it’s not provided.
We did loose power when trying to boil the kettle in the motorhome, it did it twice on 2 different electric set ups, so don’t power too much at the same time. It was fine with the TV running and air con overnight. Just didn’t like the 12v kettle.

Liked Lovely little site, loved the late check in & the host was very friendly. Toilet block was clean & tidy, the site was well kept. Ideal for a stop off if you're on your way to the ferry, or arrive in France & would like a break before setting out on your trip.

Disliked Had to run my power cable over another pitch to reach the power point, but this is only a minor niggle.

Local attractions

From the memorials and monuments in virtually every town and village, to the numerous museums, bunkers and forts dotting the landscape, you won’t be able to ignore the lasting influence of World War II on the northern parts. The military exhibits in the enormous former bunker at Blockhaus d’Eperleques (20 minutes) and Dunkirk’s Operation Dynamo museum are two top picks; if you’re really into the subject, it’s worth the hour’s trip to the coastal batteries and Museum of the Atlantic Wall at Audinghen. If it’s wind and the water you want, make for Gravelines (half an hour) where there’s kitesurfing and kayaking to be had, or head into the Platier d’Oye nature reserve 40 minutes away for walks through a dune ecosystem visited by egrets, osprey and black and white storks. For town pursuits, Dunkirk’s zoo and contemporary art museum add a bit of colour to a shopping trip, and it’s just over an hour to the attractive city of Lille, where the paintings in the Palais des Beaux-Arts compete for your attention with the Art Deco ‘skyscraper’ and a massive antiques market. Feeling competitive? There’s paintballing at Teteghem (half an hour), go-karting at Gravelines, and just over the border in Belgium, a whole load of laughs, shrieks and thrills on the rides of the Plopsaland theme park (40 minutes).
