The name of this site gives you a fair hint of what to expect – Camping Mer et Vacances is indeed right by the Opal Coast, with sea views from the site, and it makes an excellent spot for a Nord-Pas-de-Calais holiday.
To be more specific, this family-friendly site is in the resort of Leffrinckoucke, about 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Dunkirk and not far from the Belgian border. It sits between a long sandy beach and a protected dune area, with swimming areas and activities like windsurfing and kitesurfing close by – so plenty of options for all tastes.
That variety of options stretches to the site itself as well, where you can take it easy or fill your days with activities including games of tennis, pétanque and table tennis. There’s also a playground for the kids, and extra activities laid on for them in high season.
When you’re not out on the beach, you can be exploring the wider area: perhaps visiting the various World War II sites along this stretch of coast, taking the kids to popular amusement parks like Dennlys Parc and Plopsaland Belgium, or heading off to cities like Lille or Bruges (both about an hour’s drive away). And of course there’s no shortage of lovely coastal scenery and beaches…

Local attractions
Dunkirk will forever be synonymous with World War II’s Operation Dynamo – and this stretch of northern France is a good place to learn a bit more about that and other aspects of military history. Start at Fort des Dunes (20 minutes’ walk) and Museum Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo (15 minutes’ drive) before heading south to either Blockhaus d’Éperlecques (40 minutes) or the World War I memorial at In Flanders Fields Museum (50 minutes).
On a lighter note, Dunkirk is also home to Bio-Topia zoo, the Aquarium de Dunkerque, Port Museum of Dunkirk and the LAAC contemporary art museum. Elsewhere nearby you might like to try the beach at Malo-les-Bains or wander through the Réserve Naturelle Nationale Dune Marchand (both 10 minutes).
For family days out, take a look at Dennlys Parc (an hour) or cross the border to Plopsaland Belgium (15 minutes). Other Belgian options include Castle Beauvoorde (25 minutes) and exploring the waterways of Bruges (an hour).
