  • On the outskirts of Dunkirk a few hundred metres from a forest
  • 15 minutes from Dune Marchand and the Belgian border
  • Play area, games room, spacious pétanque area and bar
This is a nifty little site to stop over at on your way to or from England: Camping du Bois des Forts is a piffling 20 minutes' drive from the port at Calais, making it a cinch for Brits to zip across the Channel to la France for le weekend, or for travellers of all native persuasions to rest their travelly selves before sailing across to Dover and Blighty (it's 15 minutes from the Belgian border from here too). Lounging around for a bit longer is also a tiptop option, as Bois des Forts's Nord department and Coudekerque-Village locale is between Bergues and Dunkirk, 10 minutes' drive from the latter and its sandy Malo Les Bains beach, and close to other spectacular stretches of sand along the Opal Coast. Even more closely, a forest for hikes, bikes and horse rides is a few hundred metres away and cycling trails are plentiful in the site surroundings: one could, if one wished, get on one's wheels and pedal all the way along to Dunkirk. For days on site, there's a big play area and roomy games room to amuse the kids (or adults keen for a session of ping pong and table football), as well as a spacious pétanque area just outside the games room. A bar is around for thirst quenching in between forest hikes or seaside days. Fishing is available five minutes' away.

Local attractions

Bike for about 20 to 30 minutes from here to the seaside town of Dunkirk, 10 kilometres from the border with Belgium. The beach here is Malo-les-Bains, the setting of the famed Dunkirk evacuation in World War II, and a vast stretch running all the way to Belgium. Surfing, windsurfing and sand yachting are all popular options at Malo for active times; there's also a big public pool and a bowling alley away from the seafront, and paintball, quad biking and go-karting all within easy reach. The Dunkirk Golf Blue Green course is three kilometres from the site. More excellent beaches are nearby at Zuydcoote, Bray-Dunes, and La Panne: Bray-Dunes, Zuydcoote and one of the Flanders dunes also make up the 83 hectares of the Dune Marchand National Nature Reserve, a breeding ground for seals and a haven for plants and trees. There are marked trails around the dunes if you want to explore, and loads of info at the visitor centre in Zuydcoote to delve deeper into the history, nature and ecology of the reserve. Lille is 70 kilometres from the site.
